Purpose: To determine whether metformin use and diabetes mellitus (DM) affect central corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) by examining an eye bank corneal donor database.
Methods: The Lions Eye Institute corneal donor database, which consists of 38,318 corneal samples, was examined. Associations of ECD with metformin use and DM were tested by mixed effects linear models that account for correlations of outcomes between eyes within subjects adjusting for age, intraocular lens status, and glaucoma. Subjects (N = 17,056) with observed ECD counts for both eyes are included for analysis.
Results: Average donor age was 56.3 (SD = 15.0). ECD was not associated with metformin use (mean ± SE = 2592 ± 11.9 (N = 1014) versus nonuse [2592 ± 3.0 (N = 16,042), P = 0.302]; further analysis showed that ECD was not significantly associated with metformin use in patients with diabetes. However, metformin use was significantly associated with lower ECD among patients with glaucoma: [2658 ± 50.7 (N = 27) for use versus 2789 ± 19.0 (N = 164) for nonuse, P = 0.018]. The presence of DM was significantly associated with lower ECD 2581 ± 5.6 (N = 4766) for DM versus 2595 ± 3.4 (N = 12,290) for non-DM, P = 0.031).
Conclusions: Lower ECD was associated with DM. Lower ECD was not associated with metformin use except in a subgroup of patients with glaucoma, in which subgroup analysis showed lower ECD. The differences in ECD observed were small and unlikely to affect the suitability for transplantation of donor corneas.

Fifteen novel carbazole alkaloids, euchrestifolines A-O (1-15), were obtained from Murraya euchrestifolia. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, Mosher's ester, calculated ECD, and transition metal complex ECD methods. Notably, euchrestifolines A-C (1-3) are the first naturally occurring pyrrolidone carbazoles to be identified, while euchrestifolines D-F (4-6) represent rare carbazole alkaloids containing a phenylpropanyl moiety; euchrestifoline G (7) features a unique benzopyranocarbazole skeleton.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between postoperative oxidative stress and corneal endothelial cell loss in diabetic patients with cataract.
Methods: One hundred and twenty patients who underwent phacoemulsification were selected, including 80 diabetic patients with cataract and 40 patients with ordinary cataracts. Corneal endothelial cell loss was recorded, and the endothelial cell density (ECD), the proportion of hexagonal cells, and the corneal thickness within the central corneal area were compared.

This study proposes a novel surgical technique for the excision of benign parotid tumors, utilizing a extracapsular dissection guided by a three dimensional digital model of the facial nerve(3DFN-ECD) and compares its clinical efficacy with the extracapsular dissection (ECD) method. This prospective study included 68 patients with benign parotid tumors. The control group (40 patients) received the ECD treatment, while the experimental group (28 patients), underwent the 3DFN-ECD approach proposed in this study.

Objective: Recent studies have shown that inclusion of eggs in young children's diet can help meet nutritional requirements associated with cognitive development. This study aims to investigate the effect of egg consumption on Early Childhood Development (ECD) using Ages and Stages Questionnaire-3(ASQ-3) in Burkina Faso.
Design: The study presented here uses data collected during a follow-up of the -a 3 arm clustered randomized controlled trial (RCT), conducted roughly four months after the end of the RCT.

Purpose: The postoperative occurrence of corneal guttae (CG) in patients after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) can lead to a significant reduction in visual acuity (VA) with the subsequent need for repeat DMEK. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence and clinical significance of CG in transplanted corneas after DMEK.
Methods: The prevalence and progression of CG after DMEK of 1657 patients were examined using endothelial specular microscopy images.
