Long-lived monolithic micro-optics for multispectral GRIN applications.

The potential for realizing robust, monolithic, near-surface refractive micro-optic elements with long-lived stability is demonstrated in visible and infrared transmitting glasses capable of use in dual band applications. Employing an enhanced understanding of glass chemistry and geometric control of mobile ion migration made possible with electrode patterning, flat, permanent, thermally-poled micro-optic structures have been produced and characterized. Sub-surface (t~5-10 µm) compositional and structural modification during the poling process results in formation of spatially-varying refractive index profiles, exhibiting induced Δn changes up to 5 × 10 which remain stable for >15 months. The universality of this approach applied to monolithic vis-near infrared [NIR] oxide and NIR-midwave infrared [MIR] chalcogenide glass materials is demonstrated for the first time. Element size, shape and gradient profile variation possible through pattern design and fabrication is shown to enable a variety of design options not possible using other GRIN process methodologies.

The capture of long-lived radioactive iodine (I) from oxidizing off-gasses produced from reprocessing used nuclear fuel is paramount to human health and environmental safety. Bismuth has been investigated as a viable iodine getter but the phase stability of bismuth-based sorbents in an oxidizing environment have not yet been researched. In the current work, bismuth nanoparticle-based sorbents, as free particles (Bi-NPs) and embedded within silica xerogel monoliths made with a porogen (TEO-5), were exposed to I before and after aging in 1 v/v% NO at 150 °C.

Artificial selection for increased life span in experimental populations of Drosophila melanogaster sometimes produces long-lived populations that exhibit greater fecundity than unselected controls. The absence of a trade-off between survival and reproduction in these cases might be an artefact of the rich diet of typical lab culture; if nutritional resources are not limiting then there may be no need to trade off. Here I test the rich diet hypothesis by estimating genetic correlations between survival and age-specific fecundity in three nutritional environments.

We report on realization of an efficient triply resonant coupling between two long lived optical modes and a high frequency surface acoustic wave (SAW) mode of the same monolithic crystalline whispering gallery mode resonator. The coupling results in an opto-mechanical oscillation and generation of a monochromatic SAW. A strong nonlinear interaction of this mechanical mode with other equidistant SAW modes leads to mechanical hyperparametric oscillation and generation of a SAW pulse train and associated frequency comb in the resonator.
