Metasurfaces are generally designed by placing scatterers in periodic or pseudo-periodic grids. We propose and discuss design rules for functional metasurfaces with randomly placed anisotropic elements that randomly sample a well-defined phase function. By analyzing the focusing performance of random metasurface lenses as a function of their density and the density of the phase-maps used to design them, we find that the performance of 1D metasurfaces is mostly governed by their density while 2D metasurfaces strongly depend on both the density and the near-field coupling configuration of the surface. The proposed approach is used to design all-polarization random metalenses at near infrared frequencies. Challenges, as well as opportunities of random metasurfaces compared to periodic ones are discussed. Our results pave the way to new approaches in the design of nanophotonic structures and devices from lenses to solar energy concentrators.

Optical computing, renowned for its light-speed processing and low power consumption, typically relies on the coherent control of two light sources. However, there are challenges in stabilizing and maintaining high optical spatiotemporal coherence, especially for large-scale computing systems. The coherence requires rigorous feedback circuits and numerous phase shifters, introducing system instability and complexity.

Acoustic waves provide an effective method for object manipulation in microfluidics, often requiring high-frequency ultrasound in the megahertz range when directly handling microsized objects, which can be costly. Micro-air-bubbles in water offer a solution toward low-cost technologies using low-frequency acoustic waves. Owing to their high compressibility and low elastic modulus, these bubbles can exhibit significant expansion and contraction in response to even kilohertz acoustic waves, leading to resonances with frequencies determined and tuned by air-bubble size.

We theoretically investigate the ability to design optical filters from a single material and a single layer of randomly dispersed resonant dielectric particles, defining a random metasurface. Using a Bayesian and generalized Mie inverse-design approach, we design particle radii distributions that give rise to longpass, shortpass, bandpass, and bandstop spectral bands in the infrared. The optical response is shown to be directly related to electric and magnetic multipole scattering of the constituent particles and their near field coupling.

However, the limited number of channels available on metasurfaces and the insufficient security of keys make them vulnerable to attacks by eavesdroppers. In this work, a reprogrammable metasurface optical encryption scheme based on a three-dimensional hyperchaotic system is proposed.

However, the geometric phase often displays a random distribution, making it difficult to observe directly. We introduce a frequency-dependent phase response: at frequency f, there is a superposition of the geometric and propagation phases, whereas at frequency f, the propagation phase remains constant, and only the geometric phase is applied.
