Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces a large number of virulence factors, including the extracellular protein, Exotoxin A (ETA). Human Neutrophil Peptide 1 (HNP1) neutralizes the Exotoxin A. HNP1 belongs to the family of α-defensins, small effector peptides of the innate immune system that combat against microbial infections. Neutralization of bacterial toxins such as ETA by HNP1 is a novel biological function in addition to direct killing of bacteria. In this study, we report on the interaction between HNP-1 and Exotoxin A at the molecular level to allow for the design and development of potent antibacterial peptides as alternatives to classical antibiotics.

Purpose: Evaluation of the prognostic significance of four different scoring systems in a real-world cohort of patients with metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC) or renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) undergoing immunotherapy (IO).

Methods: For 120 patients with mUC (n = 67) and mRCC (n = 53) who received IO between July 2016 and December 2020 at the tertiary Urological University Medical Centre Mannheim, the following scores were recorded at pre-treatment baseline: modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), neutrophil-to-eosinophil ratio (NER). Overall survival (time between the beginning of IO until the patients' death or last contact) was determined for every patient.

In this article, we comment on the article by Cheng published in recently. Posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) remains a leading cause of hepatectomy-related mortality and can be evaluated according to liver reserve function. Liver stiffness (LS) measured by ultrasonic elastography and spleen area demonstrate a strong correlation with hepatic proliferation, fibrosis, and portal vein congestion, thus indirectly reflecting liver reserve function.
