Bioassay-guided fractionation of the chloroform extract of led to the isolation of four secondary metabolites ⁻. Two of the compounds are lactones—osmundalactone () and 5-hydroxy-hex-2-en-4-olide ()—while and were identified as terphenyl quinones, spiromentins C and B, respectively. The structures of the compounds were established on the basis of NMR and MS spectroscopic analysis. The isolated fungal metabolites were evaluated for their antibacterial activities against several Gram-positive and negative bacteria. In addition, their synergistic effect with cefuroxime against methicillin-resistant (MRSA) was also evaluated. Compounds ⁻ proved to possess significant antibacterial activity against multiresistant and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing . The investigation of the antioxidant effect of the isolated compounds in DPPH and ORAC assays revealed that spiromentins C () and B () have remarkable antioxidant activity.

In this study, two high-content flavonoid derivatives [3-8 biapigenin (HM 104) and quercetin-3--β--galactopyranoside (HM 111)] were obtained through the bioactivity-guided isolation of antidiabetic compounds from flowers. HM 104 and HM 111 exhibited good glucose consumption in fatty acid-induced insulin-resistant HepG2 cells. Moreover, both active compounds enhanced glucose uptake by restoring the expression of key regulators of glucose metabolism, including insulin receptor substrate 1, phosphoinositide 3-kinase, protein kinase B, and glucose transporter type 4, and by mitigating the expression of forkhead box O1 and the factors involved in gluconeogenesis.

Kunth (Piperaceae) essential oil (EO) was evaluated for its toxicity and repellency against red imported fire ants (RIFA), Buren, and a hybrid (HIFA) of red ( and black ( Forel) imported fire ants. Through bioactivity-guided fractionation, two major components, elemicin and myristicin, were isolated from the EO. Removal of treated sand in a digging bioassay was used as the criterion for repellency.
