Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare gold cup and hydrogel electrodes for frequency of electrode replacement, longevity of the original electrodes after initial placement, recording quality, and skin safety issues in long-term EEG studies in preterm neonates.

Methods: We performed a prospective trial with newborns born at ≥23 weeks and ≤30 weeks of gestational age (GA). Two mirror image EEG electrode arrays were utilized on consecutive subjects, where gold cup electrodes alternated with hydrogel electrodes.

Results: Our sample included 50 neonates with mean GA of 27 (±1) weeks. The mean recording time was 84 (±15) hours. No difference was present in the frequency of replacement of either type across the total recording time (p = 0.8). We collected the time at which electrodes were first replaced, and found that hydrogel electrodes showed a longer uninterrupted recording time of 28(±2) hours vs. 20(±2) hours for gold cup electrodes (p = 0.01). Recording quality was similar in either type (p = 0.2). None of the patients experienced significant skin irritation from a discrete electrode.

Conclusion: Long-term EEG studies can be performed with either gold cup or hydrogel electrodes, validating the safety and quality of both electrode types.

Significance: Hydrogel electrodes are a reasonable alternative for use in long-term EEG studies in preterm neonates.

Background: The risk of early revision of total hip arthroplasty (THA) for polyethylene wear is now low, but there remains a need to perform wear measurements in patients for clinical surveillance. The gold standard of wear measurements has been radiostereometric analysis (RSA), which has limited availability. The use of computed tomography (CT) to perform THA wear measurement was described a decade ago and found to have acceptable accuracy and precision, but high radiation dose was a concern.

A ground-breaking graphene-based biosensor designed for label-free detection of immunoglobulin M (IgM) achieving a remarkable concentration of 100 zeptomolar (10 m), is reported. The sensor is a two-terminal device and incorporates a millimeter-wide gold interface, bio-functionalized with ≈10 anti-IgM antibodies and capacitively coupled to a bare graphene electrode through a water-soaked paper strip. In this configuration, few affinity binding events trigger a collective electrostatic reorganization of the protein layer, leading to an extended surface potential (SP) shift of the biofunctionalized Au surface.

Clinical Relevance: Clinical evaluation of the optic nerve using 3-D stereo disc photographs is considered the gold standard for estimating vertical cup-to-disc ratios. Ultra-widefield retinal imaging has gained increasing popularity to document and screen the health of the retina and optic nerve.

Background: Glaucoma is often first identified or suspected based on initial optic nerve assessment.

-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-gold and -silver complexes have attracted the interest of the scientific community because of their multiple applications and their versatility in being chemically modified in order to improve their biological properties. However, most of these complexes contain one or more chiral centers, and have been obtained and studied as racemic mixture. In particular, concerning the interesting biological and medicinal properties, many questions about how the chirality may influence these properties still remain unanswered.

Photocatalytic oxidative coupling of methane with oxygen is promising to obtain valuable muti-carbon products, yet suffering low reactivity. Here, we apply cerium modifications on zinc oxide-supported gold catalysts based on the electronic asymmetry design of lattice oxygen to improve the coupling activity. The methane conversion rate exceeds 16000 μmol g h with muti-carbon selectivity of 94.
