The aggregation behaviour of polymer-coated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was characterized in NaCl solutions, and in two seawaters of different salinities and dissolved organic matter (DOM) contents. Representative organic coatings i.e. tannic acid (TA), alginic acid (ALG), two gum Arabic samples (GAL and GAH), branched polyethylenimine (BPEI), and non-ionic surfactants (reference material NM-300K) were selected to cover a wide range of zeta-potentials. The stability in NaCl solutions, as determined from the rate of variation in hydrodynamic size within a timeframe of one hour, followed the order BPEI≫NM-300K≈GAL≫ALG≈TA≫GAH. In the seawater samples the order was NM-300K≈GAL≫ALG>GAH>TA≈BPEI, and only TA, GAL and NM-300K batches behaved as expected from the NaCl experiments. Remarkably, the BPEI sample showed the largest aggregation rate in the seawater sample with the highest DOM concentration (277μM C). The GAH sample displayed a non-monotonic variation in aggregation rate with NaCl concentration, apparently due to concomitant precipitation of AgCl. The results indicate that non-electrostatic stabilization mechanisms and DOM-coating interactions are important for the prediction of stability and persistence of polymer-coated AgNPs in seawater.

The behavior of water in concentrated ionic solutions, including supersaturated conditions, is crucial for numerous material and energy conversion processes and fundamental research. All electrolytes whether they "structure-make" or "structure-break" the water structure lead to slower water motion. This study investigates the structure and dynamics of aqueous NaCl solutions across a wide range of concentrations.

High salinity in wastewater often hampers the performance of traditional adsorbents by disrupting electrostatic interactions and ion exchange processes, limiting their efficiency. This study addresses these challenges by investigating the salt-promoted adsorption of Cu ions onto amino-functionalized chloromethylated polystyrene (EDA@CMPS) millispheres. The adsorbent was synthesized by grafting ethylenediamine (EDA) onto CMPS, which significantly improved Cu adsorption, achieving nearly three times the capacity in saline solutions (1.

Interfacial solar vapor generation (ISVG) accompanied by photocatalytic degradation holds immense potential to mitigate water scarcity and pollution. Distinct from the two detached functional components (photothermal agent and photocatalyst) in a conventional evaporator, in this study, an all-in-one photothermal/catalytic agent, nitrogen-containing honeycomb carbon nanosheets (NHC), was engineered for synergistic high-efficiency steam generation and photocatalysis functions. It was demonstrated that the superoxide radical generated on the surface of NHC conferred its catalytic activity to the photodegradation of organic pollutants under full solar spectrum irradiation.

Purpose: To introduce and validate quantitative oblique back-illumination microscopy (qOBM) as a label-free, high-contrast imaging technique for visualizing conjunctival goblet cells (GCs) and assessing their functional changes.
Methods: qOBM was developed in conjunction with moxifloxacin-based fluorescence microscopy (MBFM), which was used for validating GC imaging. Initial validation was conducted with polystyrene beads, followed by testing on normal mouse conjunctiva under both ex-vivo and in-vivo conditions.

This study investigated the regenerability of anion exchange resins for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), focusing on the interaction between regenerant composition and resin characteristics. The influence of salt type and concentration on PFAS solubility revealed a general decline in perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) solubility with increased salt concentrations, most strongly with KCl followed by NaCl and NHCl. Mixed solubility results were observed for perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).
