Purpose: To assess student perceptions of the use of the "Muddiest Point" as a type of formative classroom assessment technique (CAT) in a clinical skills laboratory course.
Methods: Physician assistant (PA) students enrolled in a private university were invited to complete a perception survey regarding the use of the Muddiest Point at the conclusion of the course.
Results: Survey results showed positive overall student perceptions of the Muddiest Point and desire for broader use of this CAT in other courses.
Conclusions: The Muddiest Point is a CAT that is simple for the instructor to implement and showed overall perceived benefit to the PA student. The Muddiest Point is an effective method to gauge student learning and allows students to be active participants in their education.

Background: Ascertaining student understanding can be challenging in large-enrollment and hybrid or asynchronous courses.
Problem: Instructors needed an innovative instructional strategy to encourage student engagement and support learning in a large-enrollment, mixed-format pathophysiology class.
Approach: A weekly, graded assignment was created by merging the formative assessment commonly referred to as the muddiest point (MP) with an asynchronous discussion board activity within the learning management system.

Background And Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact in student pharmacists' exam performance learning outcomes and satisfaction after integrating the Muddiest Point assessment technique into exam reviews.
Educational Activity And Setting: In 2016, the Muddiest Point, a formative assessment tool, was used to develop exam review sessions for second-year student pharmacists in an integrated pharmacotherapy course focused on the cardiovascular system. Performance scores on all four exams were compared between students in the 2015 and 2016 courses.
