Background: We aimed to clarify the factors associated with the presentation of erosive esophagitis (EE) symptoms in subjects undergoing health checkups.

Methods: We utilized baseline data from 7,552 subjects who underwent upper endoscopy for health screening in a prospective, multicenter cohort study. The subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire detailing their upper abdominal symptoms and lifestyle. Based on the heartburn and/or acid regurgitation frequency, the EE subjects were stratified into the following three groups: (1) at least one day a week (symptomatic EE [sEE]), (2) less than one day a week (mild symptomatic EE [msEE]), and (3) never (asymptomatic EE [aEE]). Postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) and epigastric pain syndrome (EPS) were defined according to the Rome III criteria.

Results: Of the 1,262 (16.7%) subjects (male 83.8%, mean age 52.6 years) with EE, the proportions of sEE, msEE and aEE were 15.0%, 37.2% and 47.9%, respectively. The sEE group showed significant associations with overlapping EPS (OR: 58.4, 95% CI: 25.2-160.0), overlapping PDS (OR: 9.96, 95% CI: 3.91-26.8), severe hiatal hernia (OR: 2.43, 95% CI: 1.43-4.05), experiencing high levels of stress (OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.43-3.40), atrophic gastritis (OR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.03-2.36) and Los Angeles (LA) grade B or worse (OR: 1.72, 95% CI: 1.12-2.60) in the multivariate analysis.

Conclusions: Approximately one-sixth of EE subjects were symptomatic. A multifactorial etiology, including factors unrelated to gastric acid secretion, was associated with the symptom presentation of EE subjects.

Objective: High triglyceride (TG) levels are important risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Some recent studies have shown that snoring is also closely related to elevated TG levels. The specific pathogenesis of elevated TG levels in snoring patients is still unclear.

Altered chromatin landscape and 3D interactions associated with primary constitutional MLH1 epimutations.

Clin Epigenetics

December 2024

Hereditary Cancer Group, ONCOBELL Program, Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL), L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Spain.

Background: Lynch syndrome (LS), characterised by an increased risk for cancer, is mainly caused by germline pathogenic variants affecting a mismatch repair gene (MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, PMS2). Occasionally, LS may be caused by constitutional MLH1 epimutation (CME) characterised by soma-wide methylation of one allele of the MLH1 promoter. Most of these are "primary" epimutations, arising de novo without any apparent underlying cis-genetic cause, and are reversible between generations.

Background: Perianal fistula is one of the complications of deepened anal fissure. The present case-control study aimed to assess the risk factors of fissure-associated fistulas due to the limited available evidence.

Methods: Patients with fissure-associated fistulas were considered as case, and patients with anal fissure who were undergoing medical treatment without any previous anorectal surgeries were considered as control group.

The effects of PM components on the cardiovascular disease admissions in Shanghai City, China: a multi- region study.

BMC Public Health

December 2024

Department of Hospital Infection Control, Tongji Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, 200065, China.

Background: The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is severe worldwide. Although many studies have investigated the association of particulate pollution with CVD, the effect of finer particulate pollution components on CVD remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the effect of five PM components ([Formula: see text], sulfate; [Formula: see text], nitrate; [Formula: see text], ammonium; OM, organic matter; BC, carbon black) on CVD admission in Shanghai City, identify the susceptible population, and provide clues for the prevention and control of particulate pollution.

Background: Oral fluid contains analytes that may be reflective of health and welfare in pig herds. Additionally, oral fluid collection is a more convenient and cost-effective option when compared to blood sampling, increasing the potential of oral fluid as a non-invasive alternative tool. While a growing number of biomarkers can be measured in porcine oral fluid, the use of these analytes to compare commercial herds in veterinary practice is still limited.
