Efficient collection and safe disposal of toxic metals ions from aqueous solutions is critical for applications in environmental remediation. Although extensive efforts have been devoted to the synthesis of functional TiO materials, photocatalytic reduction (photoreduction) of aqueous metal ions into solid metals remains a challenge. We designed a TiO nanoparticle-decorated layered titanate (KTiO) material that retained the cation exchange ability of KTiO but also possessed the enhanced charge separation efficiency of KTiO. Combining cation exchange with enhanced charge separation efficiency results in a heterostructured material with remarkably high activity for the photoreduction of metal ions. Initially we demonstrated how the photocatalyst can efficiently reduce aqueous Ni cations, whereas the benchmark TiO-based P25 catalyst showed little to no activity. The resulting Ni-deposited heterostructure can then be used as a catalyst for visible light-induced photocatalytic H evolution in water.

Understanding the geochemical mechanisms governing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in groundwater is essential for mitigating health risks. However, the processes driving Cr(VI) accumulation and migration in loess regions remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the occurrence, release, and migration mechanisms of Cr(VI) across different groundwater environmental units (GEUs) in the south-central Loess Plateau, China.

Whole utilization of okara has important economic value, but there are two technical barriers: coarse mouthfeel caused by insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) and undesirable "beany" off-odors. UV-A irradiation and/or microbial fermentation were used to modify okara. The results indicated that single and combined treatments increased the soluble dietary fiber (SDF) content.

The efficiency of ultrafiltration (UF) of acidified skim milk (SM) is impaired by protein aggregation and mineral scaling. The aim of this study is to assess the potential of acidification by electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM), in comparison with citric acid (CA), prior to the UF process on filtration performance, fouling and composition of the protein concentrates. Electro-acidification, facilitated by a water-splitting reaction, decreased the pH of milk to ∼ 5.

The cation/proton exchanger (CHX), salt overly sensitive (SOS), and receptor-like kinase (RLK) genes play significant roles in the response to salt stress in plants. This study is the first to identify the SOS gene in Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) through genome-wide analysis under salt stress conditions. Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) results indicated that the expression levels of CHX, SOS, and RLK genes were upregulated, with fold changes of 1.
