Ten women with intramural leiomyomas were treated with the microencapsulated GnRH analogue Decapeptyl for 24 weeks. Four (4) mg Decapeptyl was injected, starting on day 21 of the menstrual cycle, and injections were repeated every 4 weeks for a total of 24 weeks. All patients showed a marked reduction in uterine size: before treatment it measured 284 +/- 57 cm3, after 8 weeks 122 +/- 33 cm3, and after 24 weeks 89 +/- 14 cm3. LH and estradiol decreased significantly; FSH decreased but not significantly; prolactin remained almost unaltered. Serum calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin increased, but, since calcium excretion (and hydroxyproline excretion) remained unaltered, these changes were considered to reflect increased bone turnover rather than bone loss. From these data it is concluded that Decapeptyl is very effective in reducing uterine fibroids, that treatment can be shorter than 6 months and that measurable bone loss did not occur.

In exploring adjuvant therapies for head and neck cancer, hyperthermia (40-45 °C) has shown efficacy in enhancing chemotherapy and radiation, as well as the delivery of liposomal drugs. Current hyperthermia treatments, however, struggle to reach large deep tumors uniformly and non-invasively. This study investigates the feasibility of delivering targeted uniform hyperthermia deep into the tissue using a non-invasive ultrasound spherical random phased array transducer.

Improving and expanding ground-based field methods for measuring the above-ground biomass (AGB) may enable more sample collections across a landscape and over succession regimes and better harmonize with other remote sensing techniques. Developments and increased adoption of unoccupied aerial systems (UAS) and instrumentation for vegetation monitoring enable greater understanding of vegetation in many ecosystems.

Timelapse imaging using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) has emerged as a noninvasive method to quantify bone (re)modelling. However, there is no consensus on how to perform the procedure. As part of the ASTEROID phase-2b multicenter trial, we used 29 same-day repeated scans from adults with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) to identify a method that minimized measurement error.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are widely used in cancer treatment, yet their impact on bone health remains unclear. This study aimed to perform a retrospective cohort study utilizing routine computed tomography (CT) scans from patients with melanoma to perform opportunistic quantitative CT (QCT) analysis to investigate the effects of ICI treatment on skeletal health, including volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) measurements and osteoarthritis (OA) parameters. A previously established machine-learning assisted opportunistic QCT pipeline was used to estimate lumbar spine vBMD from baseline and 12-month follow-up CT scans in patients with melanoma treated with ICI therapy and those not treated with ICI therapy.
