The synthesis and characterization of unique polyhalogen cations containing μ-bridging fluorine atoms are reported. The [Br F ] cation features a symmetric [F Br-μ-F-BrF ] bridge, whereas the [Br F ] contains asymmetric μ-F bridges. These fluoronium ions, obtained as [SbF ] salts, were investigated using Raman and F NMR spectroscopy, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Quantum chemical calculations were carried out for the gas-phase cations as well as for the solid-state compounds. Population analyses show the μ-F atoms to possess the most negative partial charge within the cations.

Metal-free aqueous batteries are promising candidates for grid-scale energy storage owing to their inherent safety, low cost, and cost effectiveness. The battery chemistry based on fast NH diffusion kinetics avoids unfavorable generation of inactive metallic byproducts. However, their practical applications have been impeded by electrolyte instability and the intrinsic drawbacks of current electrodes.

Reaction of CsF with ClF leads to Cs[Cl F ]. It contains a molecular, propeller-shaped [Cl F ] anion with a central μ -F atom and three T-shaped ClF molecules coordinated to it. This anion represents the first example of a heteropolyhalide anion of higher ClF content than [ClF ] and is the first Cl-containing interhalogen species with a μ-bridging F atom.

Specific short contacts are important in crystal engineering. Hydrogen bonds have been particularly successful and together with halogen bonds can be useful for assembling small molecules or ions into crystals. The ionic constituents in the isomorphous 3,5-dichloropyridinium (3,5-diClPy) tetrahalometallates 3,5-dichloropyridinium tetrachloridozincate(II), (CHClN)[ZnCl] or (3,5-diClPy)ZnCl, 3,5-dichloropyridinium tetrabromidozincate(II), (CHClN)[ZnBr] or (3,5-diClPy)ZnBr, and 3,5-dichloropyridinium tetrabromidocobaltate(II), (CHClN)[CoBr] or (3,5-diClPy)CoBr, arrange according to favourable electrostatic interactions.

A systematic investigation on the existence of chloroiodates formed by reaction of Cl with I Cl , apart from the well-known [ICl ] , namely [I Cl ] and [I Cl ] , was undertaken by employing theoretical as well as experimental methods. The thermodynamic stability in terms of the complexation enthalpies and Gibbs energies, and also the decomposition of the iodine(III) polyinterhalogen anions through dichlorine elimination to form iodine (I) compounds, was studied by means of DFT and ab initio quantum-chemical calculations up to an extrapolated CCSD(T)/A'QZ level. On the experimental side, mixtures of [HMIM]Cl ([HMIM] =1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium), [BMP]Cl ([BMP] =1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium chloride) and [NEt ]Cl with 0.
