A portable handheld laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (HH LIBS) instrument was evaluated as a rapid method to qualitatively analyze rare earth elements in a uranium oxide matrix. This research is motivated by the need for development of a method to perform rapid, at-line chemical analysis in a nuclear facility, particularly to provide a rapid first pass analysis to determine if additional actions or measurements are warranted. This will result in the minimization of handling and transport of radiological and nuclear material and subsequent exposure to their associated hazards. In this work, rare earth elements (Eu, Nd, and Yb) were quantitatively spiked into a uranium oxide powder and analyzed by the HH LIBS instrumentation. This method demonstrates the ability to rapidly identify elemental constituents in sub-percent levels in a uranium matrix. Preliminary limits of detection (LODs) were determined with values on the order of hundredths of a percent. Validity of this methodology was explored by employing a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standard reference materials (SRM) 610 and 612 (Trace Elements in Glass). It was determined that the HH LIBS method was able to clearly discern the rare earths elements of interest in the glass or uranium matrices.

Conventional dual-signal electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensors feature high sensitivity and reliability, but the involvement of coreactants inevitably results in a complex configuration and shows reproducibility risk. Here, we propose an exogenous coreactant-free dual-signal platform, comprising luminol (anodic luminophore), CdSe quantum dots (cathodic luminophore), and CoO/TiC electrocatalyst (coreaction promoter). At different redox potentials, CoO/TiC induces water oxidation and oxygen reduction to produce OH and O radicals, which subsequently drive cathodic and anodic ECL emission, respectively.

With the progress of atherosclerosis (AS), the arterial lumen stenosis and compact plaque structure, the thickening intima and the narrow gaps between endothelial cells significantly limit the penetration efficiency of nanoprobe to plaque, weakening the imaging sensitivity and therapy efficiency. Thus, in this study, a HO-NIR dual-mode nanomotor, Gd-doped mesoporous carbon nanoparticles/Pt with rapamycin (RAPA) loading and AntiCD36 modification (Gd-MCNs/Pt-RAPA-AC) was constructed. The asymmetric deposition of Pt on Gd-MCNs catalyzed HO at the inflammatory site to produce O, which could promote the self-motion of the nanomotor and ease inflammation microenvironment of AS plaque.

The reduction of CO mediated by transition metals has garnered significant interest, yet little is known about the reduction of CO using f-element compounds. Herein, the reduction of CO to CO by tetravalent uranium (U) compound UO is investigated via matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy and quantum chemical study. Our results reveal that a stable carbonate intermediate OUCO () can be prepared at low temperatures (4-12 K).

Near-infrared wavelength-selective soft actuators have attracted much attention for applications in microsystems in bioliving. It is desirable for the photothermal conversion materials in the actuators to be downsized to the molecular scale. However, in conventional actuator materials using copolymer gels composed of thermosensitive and photothermal conversion molecule-coordinated monomers, the strong cross-linking of molecules in the networks impairs the actuator deformation.

Pterosaur remains are rare from the lowermost Cretaceous, hampering our understanding of the taxonomic and morphological diversities of pterosaurs during this period. The Lower Cretaceous Tugulu Group in Wuerho, China is renowned for hosting the Wuerho Pterosaurian Fauna (WPF), which has so far yielded numerous fossil remains of two dsungaripterid pterosaurs, Dsungaripterus weii and Noripterus complicidens. Here we report a partial ornithocheiromorph humerus from the WPF, representing a deeply divergent clade from Dsungaripteridae.
