The adsorption-desorption behavior of polymer chains is at the heart of macromolecular surface science and technology. With the current developments in atomic force microscopy (AFM), it has now become possible to address the desorption problem from the perspective of a single macromolecule. Here, we report on desorption of single polymer chains on planar surfaces by AFM-based single molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) as a function of the pulling angle with respect to the surface-normal direction. SMFS experiments were performed in water with various substrates using different polymers covalently attached to the AFM probe tip. End-grafting at the AFM tip was achieved by surface-initiated polymerization using initiator functionalized tips. We found that the desorption force increases with a decreasing pulling angle, i.e., an enhanced adhesion of the polymer chain was observed. The magnitude of the desorption force shows a weak angular dependence at pulling angles close to the surface normal. A significant increase of the force is observed at shallower pulling from a certain pulling angle. This behavior carries the signature of an adsorption-desorption transition. The angular dependence of the normalized desorption force exhibits a universal behavior. We compared and interpreted our results using theoretical predictions for single-chain adsorption-desorption transitions.

Purpose: To describe a custom bent 27-gauge needle-guided suture snare technique for scleral fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PCIOL).

Methods: An 8-0 polypropylene suture was threaded into the lumen of a custom bent 27-gauge needle, and the needle tip was advanced into the eye from the intraocular lens (IOL) fixation point. The suture was threaded through the posterior limbal incision inside the IOL haptic loop and pulled out.

Today, composite profiles of constant cross section are widely used in advanced engineering structures. The use of composite profiles in window and door structures can reduce thermal bridging and reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling. This article focuses on the production of new, thermoplastic-based structural pultruded profiles and their application in a PVC (polyvinylchloride) window structure as a reinforcement.

Control of flow deflection angle around the corner using microjet array.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Advanced Science and Technology, Toyota Technological Institute, 2-12-1 Hisakata, Tempaku-Ku, Nagoya, Aichi, 468-8511, Japan.

In this study, a new technique for active control of the flow around a corner is proposed and a key parameter dominating the flow deflection angle is proposed. In the technique, a microjet array is used for controlling the deflection of the flow at 33 m/s ~ 54 m/s around the 25-degree corner with a small downstream-facing step, the surface of which is lined with the micro-orifices from which jets are injected into the flow. The flow velocities around the corner are measured using a PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique under each condition for injecting the microjets into the flow.

Microtextured microneedles are tiny needle-like structures with micron-scale microtextures, and the drugs stored in the microtextures can be released after entering the skin to achieve the effect of precise drug delivery. In this study, the skin substitution model of Ogden's hyperelastic model and the microneedle array and microtexture models with different geometrical parameters were selected to simulate and analyse the flow of the microtexture microneedle arrays penetrating the skin by the finite-element method, and the length of the microneedles was determined to be 200 μm, the width 160 μm, and the value of the gaps was determined to be 420 μm. A four-pronged cone was chosen as the shape of microneedles, and a rectangle was chosen as the shape of the drug-carrying microneedle.

Electrochemical Behaviors of Ultramicro Triangular Pipettes.

Anal Chem

December 2024

Beijing National Laboratory for Molecular Sciences, College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China.

Ultramicro pipettes with circular orifices have practically become common probes in exploring the microscopic world, yet the versatility of differently shaped pipettes is undermined in the pore family. Herein, ultramicro triangular pipettes with a pseudotriangular-shaped orifice were fabricated by laser-pulling triangular quartz capillaries and characterized by microscopic and electrochemical methods. Then, the differences in the electrochemical behaviors of triangular and circular pores were revealed through experiments and simulations.
