Small rhombihexahedra and small cubicuboctahedra, namely faceted polyhedra, form the basis of two novel low-density framework solids that are afforded by the self-assembly of molecular squares only or molecular squares and triangles, respectively.

Considering factors such as crustal reserves, atomic mass, redox potential and energy density, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are regarded as the most promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Transition metal-based layered oxides, especially typical NaMnO, stand out among cathode materials due to their low cost and high energy density. However, NaMnO cathodes face several challenges, including Jahn-Teller distortion, manganese dissolution, structural collapse, irreversible phase transition and significant capacity loss.

Two convex polyhedra that markedly resemble the head of the flatback sea turtle hatchling are identified. The first example is a zygomorphic tetragonal dodecahedron, while the other, an even better matching structure, is a related tetradecahedron, herein speculated to arise from this particular dodecahedron via known mechanisms gleaned from studies of the behavior of foams. A segmented, biomorphic, convex polyhedral model to address cephalic topology is thus presented stemming from solid geometry, anatomical observations, and a recently computed densest local packing arrangement of fifteen slightly oblate spheroids in which fourteen oblate spheroids surround a central such spheroid.

A milestone for the solution to the lattice sphere covering problem in dimension n = 6.

The complete classification of (primitive, generic) parallelohedra in a given dimension is a challenging computational task. Nearly 50 years have passed since the classification for the last dimension, n = 5, was completed. One application of such a classification is in solving the lattice sphere covering problem for the corresponding dimension.

Effect of non-additive mixing on entropic bonding strength and phase behavior of binary nanocrystal superlattices.

Non-additive mixing plays a key role in the properties of molecular fluids and solids. In this work, the potential for athermal order-disorder phase transitions is explored in non-additive binary colloidal nanoparticles that form substitutionally ordered compounds, namely, for equimolar mixtures of octahedra + spheres, which form a CsCl lattice compound, and cubes + spheres, which form a NaCl crystal. Monte Carlo simulations that target phase coexistence conditions were used to examine the effect on compound formation of varying degrees of negative non-additivity created by component size asymmetry and by size-tunable indentations in the polyhedra's facets, intended to allow the nestling of neighboring spheres.

Article Synopsis
  • By varying the amount of AgNO solution used, researchers synthesized different sizes of AgO crystals, including cubes, octahedra, and rhombic dodecahedra, with sizes ranging from 440 nm to 79 nm.
  • X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques revealed shape-related peak shifts and the presence of bulk and surface layer lattices, indicating changes in crystal structures at different temperatures, including negative thermal expansion behavior.
  • The optical properties of the AgO crystals were influenced by size and facets, with larger particles showing red-shifted bandgaps. Additionally, the study on CuO showed that heating affects the crystal lattice, leading to permanent changes in peak symmetry post-annealing.
