Nonlinear response of a linear silver atomic chain upon ultrafast laser excitation has been studied in real time using the time-dependent density functional theory. We observe the presence of nonlinear responses up to the fifth order in tunneling current, which is ascribed to the excitation of high-energy electrons generated by Landau damping of plasmons. The nonlinear effect is enhanced after adsorption of polar molecules such as water due to the enhanced damping rates during plasmon decay. Increasing the length of atomic chains also increases the nonlinear response, favoring higher-order plasmon excitation. These findings offer new insights towards a complete understanding and ultimate control of plasmon-induced nonlinear phenomena to atomic precision.

Background: Determining the optimum water absorption capacity of gluten-free flours for an improved breadmaking process has been a challenge because there is no standard method. In the present study, large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) tests were performed to explore the impact of different levels of added water on non-linear viscoelastic response of soy flour dough in comparison to wheat flour dough at a consistency of 500 BU.
Results: Among the LAOS parameters, large strain modulus (G') and large strain rate viscosity (η') were found to better probe the impact of added water amount on non-linear viscoelastic properties of soy flour dough.

Heatwaves are commonly simplified as binary variables in epidemiological studies, limiting the understanding of heatwave-mortality associations. Here we conduct a multi-country study across 28 East Asian cities that employed the Cumulative Excess Heatwave Index (CEHWI), which represents excess heat accumulation during heatwaves, to explore the potentially nonlinear associations of daytime-only, nighttime-only, and day-night compound heatwaves with mortality from 1981 to 2010. Populations exhibited high adaptability to daytime-only and nighttime-only heatwaves, with non-accidental mortality risks increasing only at higher CEHWI levels (75th-90th percentiles).
