Formation water (FoW) is a by-product from oil and gas production and usually has high concentrations of soluble salts and metals. Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) have been shown to reduce the toxicity of metals to aquatic animals, and previous study showed that high waterborne Ca exerts mild effect against disturbances on Na regulation in Amazonian armored catfish tamoatá (Hoplosternum littorale) acutely exposed to high Fe, Mn, and Ba levels. Here, we hypothesized that high Mg levels might also reduce the toxic effects of these metals on Na regulation of tamoatá. The exposure to 5% FoW promoted an increase in Na uptake and a rapid accumulation of Na in all tissues analyzed (kidney

The designated uses of lakes connect individuals to the natural environment, but some can expose recreational users to pathogens associated with fecal contamination that cause waterborne illnesses. Routine monitoring of fecal indicators in surface waters helps identify and track sources of fecal contamination to protect public health. We examined fecal indicators ( and enterococci) and factors influencing recreational freshwater quality.

is a common, waterborne gastrointestinal parasite that causes diarrheal disease worldwide. Currently there are no effective therapeutics to treat cryptosporidiosis in at-risk populations. Since natural products are a known source of anti-parasitic compounds, we screened a library of extracts and pure natural product compounds isolated from bacteria and fungi collected from subterranean environments for activity against .

Cystic and alveolar echinococcosis are severe zoonotic diseases characterized by long asymptomatic periods lasting months or years. Viable Echinococcus spp. eggs released into the environment through the feces of canids can infect humans through accidental ingestion via hand-to-mouth contact or consumption of contaminated food or water.

Waterborne polyurethane, with a mechanical strength comparable to solvent-based types, is eco-friendly and safe, using water as a dispersion medium. Polyacrylate excels in film formation and weather resistance but suffers from "hot stickiness and cold brittleness". Merging polyurethane and polyacrylate creates advanced hybrids, while organosilicon enhances properties but is restricted due to hydrolytic crosslinking.
