The B19 parvovirus is a cause of bone marrow failure in humans. B19 is toxic to erythroid progenitor cells in vitro. Viral products possibly responsible for toxicity were explored by transfection of cloned B19 genome into HeLa cells. The nonstructural (NS) protein was detected in cells 30 h after transfection. Plasmids containing the B19 genome were transfected with selectable marker genes in stable transformation assays. Plasmids that contained the left side of the B19 genome, which encodes the NS protein of the virus, inhibited antibiotic-resistant colony formation. Transformation occurred when NS protein expression was blocked by mutation. Suppression of transformation by NS protein was not tissue specific, suggesting a role for NS protein in toxicity for nonpermissive cells without parvovirus replication or virion accumulation.

Human Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is rarely observed in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome. We report the case of a patient with rapidly progressive functional impotence of the limbs. B19V was detected in both blood and CSF samples.

Background: A Parvovirus B19 (B19V) outbreak has been reported in Europe in 2023-2024. The aims of this study were 1) to describe the incidence of primary cases from 2012 to 2024 in one French hospital 2) to analyze the genome of 2023 strains 3) to identify virological profiles according to the clinical presentations of B19V infection.
Methods: The incidence of B19V primary cases was studied through an interrupted time-series analysis.

The viral intra-host genetic diversities and interactions with the human genome during decades of persistence remain poorly characterized. In this study, we analyzed the variability and integration sites of persisting viruses in nine organs from thirteen individuals who died suddenly from non-viral causes. The viruses studied included parvovirus B19, six herpesviruses, Merkel cell (MCPyV) and JC polyomaviruses, totaling 127 genomes.
