Sixty years ago, Willi Hennig last catalogued the Anthomyiidae, Fanniidae and Muscidae fauna of the Juan Fernández Archipelago. This archipelago, composed of three main volcanic islands (Robinson Crusoe, Alejandro Selkirk and Santa Clara), has many endemic species. We describe Fannia hennigi sp. n. from the Robinson Crusoe Island, and record 11 species in 10 genera of Anthomyiidae, Fanniidae and Muscidae. A key to the identification of all species found in Juan Fernández Archipelago and a table with all species found in the Archipelago are presented, including four new records from Robinson Crusoe Island: Delia platura (Meigen, 1826); Fannia hennigi sp. n.; Lispoides insularis Hennig, 1957 and Schoenomyzina emdeni Hennig, 1955.

Two types of secondary conidia and their formation are described from six species of Strongwellsea infecting hosts from Anthomyiidae, Muscidae and Fanniidae. We used a simple device allowing secondary conidia to be produced under very moist or comparatively dry conditions. Ellipsoid type secondary conidia, which are formed under very moist conditions, have never been reported before from the genus Strongwellsea, and they are unique for Entomophthorales; these are broadly ellipsoidal with a clearly pointed basal papilla and are actively discharged.

The Calyptratae, one of the most species-rich fly clades, only originated and diversified after the Cretaceous-Palaeogene extinction event and yet exhibit high species diversity and a diverse array of life history strategies including predation, phytophagy, saprophagy, haematophagy and parasitism. We present the first phylogenomic analysis of calyptrate relationships. The analysis is based on 40 species representing all calyptrate families and on nucleotide and amino acid data for 1456 single-copy protein-coding genes obtained from shotgun sequencing of transcriptomes.

The genus Strongwellsea (Entomophthorales) has a unique pathobiology. Infected adult dipteran hosts develop a large hole in their abdomens, through which conidia are actively discharged while the hosts are still alive. We analyzed the IST II region of Strongwellsea from 29 infected hosts representing 15 dipteran species from Anthomyiidae, Fanniidae, Muscidae, and Scathophagidae.
