In this survey, 19 species of helminths including Cestoda (Davaineidae, Hymenolepididae, and Taeniidae), Acanthocephala (Oligacanthorhynchidae), and Nematoda (Trichuridae, Ornithostrongylidae, Heligmonellidae, Oxyuridae, and Gongylonematidae) from Rattus rattus, Mus musculus, Sigmodon toltecus, Heteromys gaumeri, and Peromyscus yucatanicus in two Mayan villages in Yucatán, México, were recorded. Ten species of helminths were collected in both localities. The highest species richness was recorded in R. rattus from Xkalakdzonot (6 taxa). Twelve species are new records for Yucatán and two are registered for the first time in México. This survey constitutes the first checklist of helminth parasites in small rodents in the south-southeast of México.

A comprehensive checklist of monogenean parasites from marine fish in Algeria was compiled by reviewing the entire available literature, resulting in a detailed parasite-host and host-parasite list. This checklist includes 156 species across 71 genera and 23 families of monogeneans, with 136 species identified to the species level, while the remaining 20 species are identified only to the genus (19 species) or subfamily level (1 species). These parasites have been reported from 82 marine fish hosts, spanning 34 families: 15 species of Elasmobranchii, 1 of Holocephali, and 66 of Teleostei.

There is a growing number of reports on the occurrence of benzimidazole resistance-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the β-tubulin isotype 1 gene of various helminths of veterinary, and public health concerns. However, a comprehensive analysis of their occurrence, and their contributions to conferring benzimidazole resistance among hookworms has yet to be done. The objectives of this systematic review are to summarize and synthesize peer-reviewed evidence on the occurrence of these resistance-associated mutations in hookworms, document their geographical distribution, and assess their contributions to conferring phenotypic resistance.

  • * Between 2017 and 2020, researchers collected and examined 63 common buzzards found dead to identify internal helminth parasites through necropsy.
  • * Findings revealed the presence of various species, including Cestoda and Trematoda, and identified common buzzards as a new host for specific Platyhelminthes, along with providing the first genetic sequence for one of the species reported.

Metazoan endoparasites of snakes from Argentina: Review and checklist with distributional notes and remarks.

J Helminthol

August 2024

Laboratorio de Biología y Ecología de Helmintos Parásitos. Centro de Ecología Aplicada del Litoral (CECOAL). CONICET-UNNE, Corrientes, Argentina.

This article presents a checklist of metazoan parasites of snakes from Argentina, along with a comprehensive review of the relevant literature published between 1922 and June 2023, covering various aspects of interest. We compiled 34 species of metazoan endoparasites from 28 studies. The subclass Digenea showed the highest number of species (n = 22 species), followed by the phylum Nematoda (n = 8 species), and the subclass Pentastomida (n = 3 species and 1 ).

Article Synopsis
  • Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) is difficult to diagnose in low-resource primary healthcare settings, leading to the development of a risk factors and symptoms tool to assist healthcare workers in identifying FGS cases.
  • A study conducted with 347 women in north-western Tanzania assessed the effectiveness of this tool, with findings showing a high prevalence of symptoms suggestive of FGS.
  • Results indicated that the tool's sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing FGS were still undetermined, highlighting the need for further evaluation of its diagnostic performance.
