Characterization of pharmaceutical services in the prison system: cross-sectional study.

Cien Saude Colet

January 2025

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Assistência Farmacêutica, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. R. São Luís 150, Santana. 90620-170 Porto Alegre RS Brasil.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the organization and infrastructure of pharmaceutical services in the prison system of Rio Grande do Sul, identifying major deficiencies in the primary health care framework.
  • Most prison units lacked designated pharmacy areas and standardized procedures, with 78.4% reporting no operational guidelines for pharmacy activities.
  • Only a small percentage had a pharmacist on site, and many did not adequately monitor medication storage conditions or have proper medication dispensing processes in place, highlighting significant weaknesses in the system.

Engineering Saccharomyces cerevisiae for growth on xylose using an oxidative pathway.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2025

Engineering Biology Research Center, Kobe University, 1-1 Rokkodai, Nada, Kobe, 657-8501, Japan.

The fermentative production of valuable chemicals from lignocellulosic feedstocks has attracted considerable attention. Although Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a promising microbial host, it lacks the ability to efficiently metabolize xylose, a major component of lignocellulosic feedstocks. The xylose oxidative pathway offers advantages such as simplified metabolic regulation and fewer enzymatic steps.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an increasingly popular neuroimaging technique that measures cortical hemodynamic activity in a non-invasive and portable fashion. Although the fNIRS community has been successful in disseminating open-source processing tools and a standard file format (SNIRF), reproducible research and sharing of fNIRS data amongst researchers has been hindered by a lack of standards and clarity over how study data should be organized and stored. This problem is not new in neuroimaging, and it became evident years ago with the proliferation of publicly available neuroimaging datasets.

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVF) commonly occur at the thoracolumbar junction, and delayed neurological deficits are rare. Here, a 76-year-old female presented with low back pain and the late onset of symptoms characterized by lumbar radiculopathy. She had been suffering from lower back pain for four weeks and developed lumbar radiculopathy in the left L3 area.

Rational multienzyme architecture design with iMARS.

Cell

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism, Joint International Research Laboratory of Metabolic & Developmental Sciences, and School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200240, China; Zhangjiang Institute for Advanced Study, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200240, China; Research Center for Proteins & Bits, Lumy Biotechnology, Changzhou, Jiangsu 213200, China. Electronic address:

Biocatalytic cascades with spatial proximity can orchestrate multistep pathways to form metabolic highways, which enhance the overall catalytic efficiency. However, the effect of spatial organization on catalytic activity is poorly understood, and multienzyme architectural engineering with predictable performance remains unrealized. Here, we developed a standardized framework, called iMARS, to rapidly design the optimal multienzyme architecture by integrating high-throughput activity tests and structural analysis.
