In this feasibility study Transmission Raman spectroscopy (TRS) has been used to build quantitative models for warfarin sodium and warfarin sodium clathrate. The type of warfarin present in manufactured tablets may affect product quality. Models were used to predict warfarin sodium in commercially available tablets at extremely low dosage levels (0.5% w/w). The laboratory made calibration samples used in the modelling varied in amorphous sodium, crystalline clathrate warfarin forms, excipients and dye. This application was highly challenging due to the low level of API and high level of a Raman-active colourant which varied significantly between production batches. A photon recycling optic, known as a Beam Enhancer, was utilised to improve the signal to noise of the Raman spectra to attain a low limit of quantification of 0.19% w/w.

The presence of high levels of fluoride (F) in groundwater is a major issue worldwide. Although F is essential for healthy teeth and bones, excessive exposure can cause fluorosis or F toxicity. This condition primarily affects the hard tissues due to their high F retention capacity.

Low levels of human norovirus (HuNoV) in food and environment present challenges for nucleic acid detection. This study reported an evaporation-enhanced hydrogel digital reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (HD RT-LAMP) with interfacial enzymatic reaction for sensitive HuNoV quantification in food and water. By drying samples on a chamber array chip, HuNoV particles were enriched in situ.

Antibiotic residues pose a significant threat to global health. Traditional detection methods for antibiotics are cumbersome, time-consuming and often incapable of achieving non-destructive detection at low temperatures. This research introduces a groundbreaking innovation in antibiotic detection: a flexible Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering substrate based on a silver composite deep eutectic solvent (DES) gel, specifically engineered for low-temperature antibiotic detection.

Insomnia is prevalent among patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD), potentially undermining treatment and increasing the risk of relapse. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line treatment for insomnia, but its efficacy is not well-characterized in patients across the spectrum of AUD. The aim of this meta-analysis was to quantify the effectiveness of CBT-I in improving insomnia severity and alcohol-related outcomes in adults with heavy alcohol use and/or varying levels of AUD severity and comorbid insomnia.

The quantitative characterization of the structure of biomineral surfaces is needed for guiding regenerative strategies. Current techniques are compromised by a requirement for extensive sample preparation, limited length-scales, or the inability to repeatedly measure the same surface over time and monitor structural changes. We aim to address these deficiencies by developing Calcium (Ca) K-edge Polarisation Induced Contrast X-ray Fluorescence (PIC-XRF) to quantify hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystallite structural arrangements in high and low textured surfaces.
