Purpose Of Review: South Asia is one of the epicenters of the global diabetes pandemic. Diabetes in south Asians has certain peculiar features with respect to its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and management. This review aims to summarize some of the recent evidence pertaining to the distinct diabetes phenotype in south Asians.

Recent Findings: South Asia has high incidence and prevalence rates of diabetes. The progression from "pre-diabetes" to diabetes also occurs faster in this population. Pancreatic beta cell dysfunction seems to be as important as insulin resistance in the pathophysiology of diabetes in south Asians. Recent evidence suggests that the epidemic of diabetes in south Asia is spreading to rural areas and to less affluent sections of society. Diabetes in south Asians differs significantly from that in white Caucasians, with important implications for prevention, diagnosis, and management.

Human Performance Research Centre, School of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Health, University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Moore Park Rd, Moore Park, Gadigal Land, Eora Nation, Sydney, New South Wales, 2021, Australia.

Pasifika communities in Western Sydney experience significant health disparities, particularly related to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular conditions and diabetes. Physical activity is known to improve both physical and mental health, yet access to culturally responsive physical activity programs for Pasifika communities is limited. This study leveraged expertise from an Advisory Committee to adopt community-based participatory research (CBPR) through Talanoa to co-design a physical activity program specifically tailored for Pasifika people in Western Sydney.

Diabetic vascular aging is driven by macrophage senescence, which propagates senescence-associated secretory phenotypes (SASP), exacerbating vascular dysfunction. This study utilized a type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mouse model induced by streptozotocin injection and a high-fat diet to investigate the role of STING in macrophage senescence. Vascular aging markers and senescent macrophages were assessed , while , high glucose treatment induced macrophage senescence, enhancing senescence in co-cultured vascular smooth muscle cells.
