Objective: Preterm labor is one of the most significant obstetric problems associated with high rate of actual and long-term perinatal complications. Despite the creation of scoring systems, uterine activity monitoring, cervical ultrasound and several biochemical markers, the prediction and prevention of preterm labor is still a matter of concern. The aim of this study was to examine cervical findings for the prediction and the comparative use of Arabin pessary or cerclage for the prevention of preterm birth in asymptomatic women with high risk factors for preterm labor.

Material And Methods: The study group was composed of singleton pregnancies (spontaneously conceived) with high risk factors for preterm labor. Cervical length, dilatation of the internal cervical os and funneling, were estimated with transvaginal ultrasound during the first and the second trimesters of pregnancy.

Results: Cervical funneling, during the second trimester of pregnancy, was the most significant factor for the prediction of preterm labor. The use of Arabin cervical pessary was found to be more effective than cerclage in the prolongation of pregnancy.

Conclusion: In women at risk for preterm labor, the detection of cervical funneling in the second trimester of pregnancy may help to predict preterm labor and to apply the appropriate treatment for its prevention. Although the use of cervical pessary was found to be more effective than cerclage, more studies are needed to classify the effectiveness of different methods for such prevention.

Backgrounds: Many pregnant women suffer from more than one pregnancy complication. However, whether those women experienced a higher risk of adverse birth outcomes is unclear. This study aims to assess the association between the comorbidity of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and hypertension disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and adverse birth outcomes.

A Rare Case of Fetal Neural Tube Defect; Iniencephaly Clausus.

AJP Rep

July 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bahir Dar University, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

Iniencephaly is an extremely rare type of neural tube defect characterized by the fusion of the cervical and cervicothoracic vertebrae. This condition results in acute retroflexion of the head, a short neck, significant lordosis of the cervical spine, and an upturned facial appearance. This condition typically results in poor fetal outcomes, with many cases ending in stillbirth or neonatal death.

Introduction Hypothyroidism represents an endocrine disorder marked by the insufficient production of hormones by the thyroid gland, with significant effects on bodily functions. Its occurrence during pregnancy is of particular concern due to its profound effects on both maternal and fetal health outcomes. Aim To study the impact of hypothyroidism in pregnancy and its correlation with feto-maternal outcomes.

Individuals who are at risk of not achieving a full milk supply are often overlooked in scientific literature. There is available guidance to help establish an adequate milk supply for healthy individuals experiencing a physiologic labor and birth, and there are robust recommendations for the lactating parents of small, sick, and preterm newborns to ensure that these newborns can receive human milk. Missing from the literature are clinical practice guidelines that address the preexisting health, pregnancy, birth, or newborn-related risk factors for suboptimal lactation.

Upregulated YTHDC1 mediates trophoblastic dysfunction inducing preterm birth in ART conceptions through enhanced RPL37 translation.

Cell Mol Life Sci

The International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 910# Hengshan Road, Shanghai, China.

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) pregnancies present a higher risk of singleton preterm birth than natural pregnancies, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains largely unknown. RNA mA modification is a key epigenetic mechanism regulating cellular function, but the role of mA modification, especially its "reader" YTHDC1, in preterm delivery remains undefined. To delineate the role and epigenetic mechanism of mA modification in ART preterm delivery, the effects of YTHDC1 on trophoblastic function were evaluated by CCK-8, EdU, Transwell, and flow cytometry analyses post its overexpression or knockdown.
