Si/Ge core/shell nanowire heterostructures have been expected to provide high energy and power densities for lithium ion battery anodes due to the large capacity of Si and the high electrical and ionic conductivities of Ge. Although the battery anode performances of Si/Ge core/shell nanowire heterostructures have been characterized, the degradation of Si/Ge core/shell nanowire heterostructures has not been thoroughly investigated. Here we report the compositional and structural changes of the Si/Ge core/shell nanowire heterostructure over cycling of lithiation and delithiation at different charging rates. The Si/Ge core/shell nanowire heterostructure holds the core and shell structure at a charging rate of 0.8 A g-1 up to 50 cycles. On the other hand, compositional intermixing and loss of Si occur at a charging rate of 20 A g-1 within 50 cycles. The operation condition-dependent degradation provides a new aspect of materials research for the development of high performance lithium ion battery anodes with a long cycle life.

Polarization-Tuned Fano Resonances in All-Dielectric Short-Wave Infrared Metasurface.

Adv Mater

July 2023

The short-wave infrared (SWIR) is an underexploited portion of the electromagnetic spectrum in metasurface-based nanophotonics despite its strategic importance in sensing and imaging applications. This is mainly attributed to the lack of material systems to tailor light-matter interactions in this range. Herein, this limitation is addressed and an all-dielectric silicon-integrated metasurface enabling polarization-induced Fano resonance control at SWIR frequencies is demonstrated.

SiGe nanowires (NWs) were prepared by gold-supported chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using a single-source precursor with preformed Si-Ge bonds. Besides the tamed reactivity of the precursor, the approach reduces the process parameters associated with the control of decomposition characteristics and the dosing of individual precursors. The group IV alloy NWs are single crystalline with a constant diameter along their axis.

Enhancing the Coherent Phonon Transport in SiGe Nanowires with Dense Si/Ge Interfaces.

The manipulation of phonon transport with coherent waves in solids is of fundamental interest and useful for thermal conductivity design. Based on equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and lattice dynamics calculations, the thermal transport in SiGe superlattice nanowires with a tuned Si/Ge interface density was investigated by using the core-shell and phononic structures as the primary stacking layers. It was found that the thermal conductivity decreased with the increase of superlattice period lengths (Lp) when Lp was larger than 4 nm.

Control of surface defects and impurity doping are important keys to realizing devices that use semiconductor nanowires (NWs). As a structure capable of suppressing impurity scattering, p-Si/i (intrinsic)-Ge core-shell NWs with radial heterojunctions inside the NWs were formed. When forming NWs using a top-down method, the positions of the NWs can be controlled, but their surface is damaged.

Endohedrally Doped Cage Clusters.

Chem Rev

The discovery of carbon fullerene cages and their solids opened a new avenue to build materials from stable cage clusters as "artificial atoms" or "superatoms" instead of atoms. However, cage clusters of other elements are generally not stable. In 2001, calculations showed that endohedral doping of Zr and Ti atoms leads to highly stable Zr@Si fullerene and Ti@Si Frank-Kasper polyhedral clusters with large HOMO-LUMO gaps.
