A live-bearing reproductive strategy can induce large morphological changes in the mother during pregnancy. The evolution of the placenta in swimming animals involves a shift in the timing of maternal provisioning from pre-fertilization (females supply their eggs with sufficient yolk reserves prior to fertilization) to post-fertilization (females provide all nutrients via a placenta during the pregnancy). It has been hypothesised that this shift, associated with the evolution of the placenta, should confer a morphological advantage to the females leading to a more slender body shape during the early stages of pregnancy. We tested this hypothesis by quantifying three-dimensional shape and volume changes during pregnancy and in full-grown virgin controls of two species within the live-bearing fish family Poeciliidae: Poeciliopsis gracilis (non-placental) and Poeciliopsis turneri (placental). We show that P. turneri is more slender than P. gracilis at the beginning of the interbrood interval and in virgins, and that these differences diminish towards the end of pregnancy. This study provides the first evidence for an adaptive morphological advantage of the placenta in live-bearing fish. A similar morphological benefit could drive the evolution of placentas in other live-bearing (swimming) animal lineages.

Objective This study aims to evaluate the real-world efficacy of ranibizumab biosimilar (Ongavia), compared to aflibercept (Eylea), in the treatment of treatment-naïve neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) at a busy tertiary eye care centre. Methods A retrospective analysis of medical records from August 2022 to August 2024 was conducted, comparing treatment outcomes in treatment-naive nAMD patients who received either Ongavia or Eylea intravitreal anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) injections under a treat-and-extend protocol. Initial and 12-month outcome measures post-treatment initiation were collected, including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), prescribed treatment intervals, actual injection frequency, and the average total number of injections per eye over 12 months.

Plasmonic materials can be utilized as effective platforms to enhance luminescent signals of luminescent metal nanoclusters (LMNCs). Both surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF) and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced fluorescence (SHINEF) strategies take advantage of the localized and increased external electric field created around the plasmonic metal surface when excited at or near their characteristic plasmonic resonance. In this context, we present an experimental and computational study of different plasmonic composites, (Ag) Ag@SiO2 and (Au) Au@SiO2 nanoparticles, which were used to enhance the luminescent signal of Au nanoclusters coated with glutathione (GSH) molecule (Au25GSH NCs).

Regeneration of the multiple tissues and interfaces in the periodontal complex necessitates multidisciplinary evaluation to establish structure/function relationships. This article, an initiative of the Academy of Dental Materials, provides guidance for performing chemical, structural, and mechanical characterization of materials for periodontal tissue regeneration, and outlines important recommendations on methods of testing bioactivity, biocompatibility, and antimicrobial properties of biomaterials/scaffolds for periodontal tissue engineering. First, we briefly summarize periodontal tissue engineering fabrication methods.

Semiconductor polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) photocatalysts have garnered significant and rapidly increasing interest in the realm of visible light-driven hydrogen evolution reactions. This interest stems from their straightforward synthesis, ease of functionalization, appealing electronic band structure, high physicochemical and thermal stability, and robust photocatalytic activity. This review starts with the basic principle of photocatalysis and the development history, synthetic strategy, and structural properties of g-CN materials, followed by the rational design and engineering of g-CN from the perspectives of nano-morphological control and electronic band tailoring.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the deadliest malignant tumor, with a grim 5-year overall survival rate of about 12%. As its incidence and mortality rates rise, it is likely to become the second-leading cause of cancer-related death. The radiological assessment determined the stage and management of PDAC.
