Mercuric chloride (HgCL2) is an environmental and industrial toxicant that affects many tissues. Considering oxidative stress is an important component of mercury induced hepatotoxicity, antioxidants are expected to play a protective role against it. The present study was designed to investigate the probable effects of pomegranate seed oil (PSO) on hepatotoxicity induced by HgCL₂, administration in rats. Rats were divided into five groups. Group 1 and 2 received corn oil (1 mL/kg, i.p.) and PSO (0.8 mL/kg, i.p.), respectively. Group 3 was treated with HgCl, (5 mg/kg, i.p.) for 3 days. In groups 4 and 5 PSO (0.4 and 0.8 mL/kg i.p., respectively) was given 1 h before HgCl2 administration. Twenty four hours after last injection of HgCl2, blood samples and specimens of liver were taken. HgCl2 administration led to significant increase in liver malondialdehyde level, significant reduction in total sulfhydryl content and significant changes in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase activity (AST), compared to control group. The histopathological changes such as necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration and hepatocellular vacuolization were observed. PSO administration (0.8 mL/kg i.p.) improved the liver function in HgCL2 intoxicated animals as indicated by the significant decline in increased levels of AST, ALT in serum, MDA level and significant elevation in decreased total sulfhydryl content. Histological studies revealed milder hepatic lesions in PSO treated samples. The results indicated that oxidative stress may be an important mechanism of HgCl₂ induced hepatic injury and dysfunction and PSO may be a useful agent for the prevention of HgCl₂ induced oxidative damage in rat liver.

Determination of main lipids and volatile compounds in unconventional cold-pressed seed oils through chromatographic techniques.

The purpose of this study was to characterize unconventional cold-pressed seed oils (rosehip, strawberry, blackcurrant, carrot, plum, pomegranate, radish, and raspberry) as novel alternative edible oil source. A chemical characterization of different lipid components (total fatty acid composition, triacylglycerols, and vitamin E) and volatiles responsible for the particular aroma of these oils was reported. All the oils showed a content of unsaturated fatty acids, mainly oleic, linoleic, and α-linolenic acid, that potentially contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, in the range of 80%-90%.

Pomegranate seeds, a by-product of pomegranate processing, are gaining attention in food industries due to their high antioxidant activity. However, the lack of quality markers reflecting activity and spatial characteristics limits their utilization and product stability. In this research, a selective and sensitive method integrating ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry with feature-based molecular networking, and desorption electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry imaging developed to identify components and locate in-situ images of quality markers via spatial metabolomics analysis.

LN18178 is a standardized, synergistic combination of fruit rind and seed extracts, which has been reported to increase serum testosterone levels in young and aging males. The present 84-day randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study assessed the efficacy of LN18178 on the sexual function of aging male volunteers (age: 40-70 years; serum total testosterone: ≥ 300 ng/dL). The subjects with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction [5-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) scores 17-25] and low sexual desire (score < 3 on items 11 and 12 of IIEF) participated in this investigation.
