Many tetrapod vertebrates have two distinct olfactory organs, the olfactory epithelium (OE) and vomeronasal organ (VNO). In turtles, the olfactory organ consists of two types of sensory epithelia, the upper chamber epithelium (UCE; corresponding to the OE) and the lower chamber epithelium (LCE; corresponding to the VNO). In many turtle species, the UCE contains ciliated olfactory receptor cells (ORCs) and the LCE contains microvillous ORCs.

Organisms may retain nonfunctional anatomical features as a consequence of evolutionary natural selection. Resultant atavistic and vestigial anatomical structures have long been a source of perplexity. Atavism is when an ancestral trait reappears after loss through an evolutionary change in previous generations, whereas vestigial structures are remnants that are largely or entirely functionless relative to their original roles.

Cisplatin resistance is a major therapeutic challenge in advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Here, we aimed to investigate the key signaling pathway for cisplatin resistance in HNSCC cells. Vomeronasal type-1 receptor 5 (VN1R5) was identified as a cisplatin resistance-related protein and was highly expressed in cisplatin-resistant HNSCC cells and tissues.

Not all animals behave identically when faced with the same situation. These individual differences in the expression of their behavior could be due to many factors, including medical conditions. These medical problems can change behavior directly or indirectly.

The differentiation of sensory neurons involves gene expression changes induced by specific transcription factors. Vomeronasal sensory neurons (VSNs) in the mouse vomeronasal organ (VNO) consist of two major subpopulations of neurons expressing vomeronasal 1 receptor (V1r)/Gαi2 or vomeronasal 2 receptor (V2r)/Gαo, which differentiate from a common neural progenitor. We previously demonstrated that the differentiation and survival of VSNs were inhibited in ATF5 transcription factor-deficient mice (Nakano et al.
