Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the principal energy currency of all living cells. Metabolically impaired obligate intracellular parasites, such as the human pathogens Chlamydia trachomatis and Rickettsia prowazekii, can acquire ATP from their host cells through a unique ATP/adenosine diphosphate (ADP) translocator, which mediates the import of ATP into and the export of ADP and phosphate out of the parasite cells, thus allowing the exploitation of the energy reserves of host cells (also known as energy parasitism). This type of ATP/ADP translocator also exists in the obligate intracellular endosymbionts of protists and the plastids of plants and algae and has been implicated to play an important role in endosymbiosis.

Doping guest materials into host materials with a confined space to suppress nonradiative decay is an effective strategy for achieving room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). However, constructing host-guest doped materials with ultralong RTP (URTP) is still challenging. Herein, by embedding three coumarin derivatives into boric acid via one-step heat treatment, the URTP material with an afterglow lasting up to 60 s, a phosphorescence lifetime of 1.

Bioelectrodes function as a critical interface for signal transduction between living organisms and electronics. Conducting polymers (CPs), particularly poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate), are among the most promising materials for bioelectrodes, due to their electrical performance, high compactness, and ease of processing, but often suffer from degradation or de-doping even in some common environments (e.g.

Effective chemical catalysts can artificially control intracellular metabolism. However, in conventional catalytic chemistry, activity and cytotoxicity have a trade-off relationship; thus, driving catalysts in living cells remains challenging. To overcome this critical issue at the interface between catalytic chemistry and biology, we developed cell-driven allosteric catalysts that exert catalytic activity at specific times.

Mobile manipulation aids aim at enabling people with motor impairments to physically interact with their environment. To facilitate the operation of such systems, a variety of components, such as suitable user interfaces and intuitive control of the system, play a crucial role. In this article, we validate our highly integrated assistive robot EDAN, operated by an interface based on bioelectrical signals, combined with shared control and a whole-body coordination of the entire system, through a case study involving people with motor impairments to accomplish real-world activities.
