Hybrid ( ×) table grape cultivars grown in the subtropics often fail to accumulate sufficient anthocyanins to achieve good uniform berry color. Growers of table grapes in temperate regions generally use ethephon and, more recently, ()--abscisic acid (-ABA) to overcome this problem. The objective of this study was to determine if -ABA applications at different timings and concentrations have an effect on anthocyanin regulatory and biosynthetic genes, pigment accumulation, and berry color of the Selection 21 cultivar, a new × hybrid seedless grape that presents lack of red color when grown in subtropical areas. Applications of -ABA 400 mg/L resulted in a higher accumulation of total anthocyanins and of the individual anthocyaninsanthocyanins: delphinidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-glucoside, peonidin-3-glucoside, and malvidin-3-glucoside in the berry skin and improved the color attributes of the berries. Treatment with two applications at 7 days after véraison (DAV) and 21 DAV of -ABA 400 mg/L resulted in a higher accumulation of total anthocyanins in the skin of berries and increased the gene expression of , , , and and of the and transcription factors in the seedless grape cultivar.

Anthocyanins are responsible for grape ( L.) skin color. To obtain a more detailed understanding of the anthocyanin regulatory networks across' the summer and winter seasons in grapes under a double-cropping viticulture system, the transcriptomes of 'Summer Black' grapes were analyzed using RNA sequencing.

Article Synopsis
  • The yeast Pichia caribbica from the Meyerozyma guilliermondii species complex shows diverse abilities that help it adapt and survive in various environments.
  • The study explored how phytic acid (PA) can improve P. caribbica's effectiveness in protecting table grapes from decay and preserving their quality, with findings indicating that PA enhances yeast growth and biofilm formation.
  • Treatment with PA not only increased antioxidant enzyme activity in P. caribbica but also led to better control of grape decay during storage, demonstrating potential for sustainable postharvest solutions that consumers found appealing based on improved grape quality.

Plant-derived biostimulants have gained attention in agricultural practices for their potential to enhance crop quality and resilience. In this study, we investigated the effects of applying a maize gluten-derived protein hydrolysate at the soil level in vineyards on berry quality in a table grape variety, the Black Magic early table grapevine, during veraison. Our results demonstrate significant improvements in various parameters 14 days after application, including increased anthocyanin levels, enhanced sugar accumulation, and larger berry diameter while maintaining berry firmness.

Department of Agronomy - Entomology, Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Rua Dom Manuel de Medeiros, s/n - Dois Irmãos, Recife - PE, 52171-900, Brazil.

Sequential sampling plans are employed for the rapid characterization of infestations to facilitate decision-making. This study aimed to (i) investigate the spatial distribution of Oligonychus punicae (Hirst) in grapevine crops, (ii) determine the most representative branch, leaf, and leaf region for monitoring, and (iii) develop a sequential sampling plan for decision-making to control O. punicae in the table grape varieties Arra 15, BRS Vitória, Cotton Candy, Sugar Crisp, and Timpson at different phenological stages.
