Health security-Why is 'public health' not enough?

Glob Health Res Policy

January 2025

Faculty of Medicine and Health, Sydney School of Public Health, The University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

There is a growing tendency in global discourse to describe a health issue as a security issue. But why is this health security language and framing necessary during times of crisis? Why is the term "health security" used when perhaps simply saying "public health" would do? As reference to 'health security' grows in contemporary discourse, research, advocacy, and policymaking, its prominence is perhaps most consequential in public health. Existing power dynamics in global health are produced and maintained through political processes.

Low-Pass Whole Genome Sequencing of Cell-Free DNA from Cerebrospinal Fluid: A Focus on Pediatric Central Nervous System Tumors.

Clin Chem

January 2025

Division of Hematology, Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant & Cellular Therapy, Department of Pediatrics, Seattle Children's Hospital, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, United States.

Background: Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) technology has allowed for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), a previously underutilized biofluid, to be analyzed in new ways. The interrogation of CSF-derived cfDNA is giving rise to novel molecular insights, particularly in pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors, where invasive tumor tissue acquisition may be challenging. Contemporary disease monitoring is currently restricted to radiographic surveillance by magnetic resonance imaging and CSF cytology to directly detect abnormal cells and cell clusters.

ANI-1ccx-gelu Universal Interatomic Potential and Its Fine-Tuning: Toward Accurate and Efficient Anharmonic Vibrational Frequencies.

J Phys Chem Lett

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces, Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, and College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China.

Calculating anharmonic vibrational modes of molecules for interpreting experimental spectra is one of the most interesting challenges of contemporary computational chemistry. However, the traditional QM methods are costly for this application. Machine learning techniques have emerged as a powerful tool for substituting the traditional QM methods.

Unprotected distal left main percutaneous intervention.

Prog Cardiovasc Dis

December 2024

University of Virginia, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine, Charlottesville, VA 22901, United States of America. Electronic address:

Revascularization has been demonstrated to be clearly superior to medical therapy for significant unprotected left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease. Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) has a class 1 indication in both the American and European society guidelines for the treatment of LMCA disease. However, for the population of patients who are declined CABG after a heart team evaluation, percutaneous coronary interventional (PCI) may be an efficacious alternative.
