This study shows the implementation of the Anaerobic Digestion Model (ADM1) in an anaerobic plug-flow reactor (PFR) with two approaches based on the use of consecutive continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) connected in serie for considering non-ideal mixing. The two-region (TR) model splits each CSTR into two regions, while the particulate retention (PR) model adds a retention parameter. The models were calibrated and validated based on experimental data from a bench-scale reactor treating cow manure. The PFR conventional model slightly outperformed the non-ideal mixing approaches. However, the PR model showed an increase in biomass retention time treating high solid content substrate. Biogas production was not sensitive to variations of the mixing parameters. The liquid fraction content was better represented by the PR model than the PFR and TR models. The study shows how reactor modelling is useful for monitoring and supervising biogas plants.

The hydration state of the alcohols was investigated using the extended molar absorption coefficient, which redefines the molar absorption coefficient as a differential coefficient of concentration. The extended molar absorption coefficient is a function of the concentration calculated from the difference in absorbance, and is consistent with the conventional molar absorption coefficient, allowing a complete quantitative comparison. The quantitative performance was verified using IR and NIR absorption spectra of aqueous solutions of monovalent alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, and tert-butanol) that were soluble in water at any mixing ratio.

Measurement of the internal magnetic field is crucial for determining the equilibrium, stability, and current density of a plasma in a tokamak. A motional Stark Effect (MSE) diagnostic was developed to provide a measurement of the internal magnetic field in tokamaks by analyzing the emission from the interaction of the plasma particle with an injected neutral beam. The Stark effect causes the shifting and splitting of deuterium spectral lines due to the Lorentz electric field.

Alcohol/alkane solutions widely used in chemical synthesis and as transportation fuels are highly non-ideal due to the nanoscale clustering of the amphiphilic alcohol molecules within the nonpolar alkanes. Besides impacting reactivity, such as combustion, non-ideal solutions are likely to exhibit unusual solvation dynamics on ultrafast time scales arising from the structurally heterogeneous nature of molecular-scale association. Using a convenient transition metal carbonyl vibrational probe [(C5H5)Mn(CO)3, CMT], linear absorption and nonlinear two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) spectroscopy reveal composition-dependent solvation dynamics as reported by the frequency fluctuation correlation function in a series of ethanol/heptane solutions.

Multicomponent macromolecular mixtures often form higher-order structures, which may display non-ideal mixing and aging behaviors. In this work, we first propose a minimal model of a quaternary system that takes into account the formation of a complex via a chemical reaction involving two macromolecular species; the complex may then phase separate from the buffer and undergo a further transition into a gel-like state. We subsequently investigate how physical parameters such as molecular size, stoichiometric coefficients, equilibrium constants, and interaction parameters affect the phase behavior of the mixture and its propensity to undergo aging via gelation.

The design of a mixed-mode proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller circuit using current-feedback operational amplifiers (CFOAs) as active components is proposed. With the same circuit topology, the proposed configuration of three CFOAs, four resistors, and two capacitors is capable of performing the PID controller in each of the following four modes: voltage mode, trans-admittance mode, current mode, and trans-impedance mode. Numerous mathematical analyses are conducted to determine the controller's performance under both ideal and non-ideal conditions.
