The reaction of [60]fullerene with aromatic aldehydes and triethylamine/diethylamine in the absence or presence of manganese(iii) acetate under air conditions afforded a series of N-ethyl-2-arylvinyl-5-methyl fulleropyrrolidines in moderate to good yields, which would be difficult to synthesize by reported protocols. The in situ generation of arylvinyl aldehydes by the aldol reaction of aromatic aldehydes with acetaldehyde from an unusual C-N bond cleavage of triethylamine/diethylamine played a crucial role in the successful preparation of the corresponding fulleropyrrolidines. Depending on the reaction conditions, both cis and trans isomers of fulleropyrrolidines could be selectively synthesized. Cis isomers as major products could be obtained by reacting with triethylamine at 160 °C without the addition of manganese(iii) acetate, while trans isomers as major products, with rare exceptions, could be observed via the reaction with diethylamine at 120 °C under the assistance of manganese(iii) acetate. Moreover, the in situ generated arylvinyl aldehydes displayed higher reactivity towards diethylamine as compared with aryl aldehydes, leading to the formation of arylvinyl-substituted fulleropyrrolidines. A plausible formation mechanism for fulleropyrrolidines was provided based on the experimental observations.

Natural products play an important part in synthetic chemistry since they have many pharmacological properties and are used as active drug compounds in pharmaceutical chemistry. However, synthesis of these complex molecules is difficult due to the requirement of various synthetic steps, which include highly regio- and stereoselectivity. Therefore, oxidative radical cyclization assisted by manganese(III) acetate serves as an important step in obtaining spiro-, tricyclic, tetracyclic, and polycyclic derivatives of these compounds.

Self-assembly of new donor-acceptor systems based on (5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphinato)manganese(III)/(5,10,15,20-tetra-4-tert-butylphenylporphinato)manganese(III)/(octakis(4-tert-butylphenyl)tetraazaporphinato)manganese(III) acetate ((AcO)MnTPP/(AcO)MnTBPP/(AcO)MnTAP) and 4-(10-phenylanthracen-9-yl)pyridine (PyAn) was studied using fluorescence spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. It was found that the coordination complexes of 1 : 1 composition (dyads) are formed in toluene. The spectral properties, the chemical structures and redox behavior of the dyads were described using H NMR, IR, ESR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, respectively.

Materials that convert the energy of a laser pulse into heat can generate a photoacoustic wave through thermoelastic expansion with characteristics suitable for improved sensing, imaging, or biological membrane permeation. The present work involves the production and characterization of materials composed of an ultrathin layer of titanium dioxide (<5 μm), where a strong absorber molecule capable of very efficiently converting light into heat (5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonylphenyl)porphyrin manganese(iii) acetate) is adsorbed. The influence of the thickness of the TiO layer and the duration of the laser pulse on the generation of photoacoustic waves was studied.

We report a radical transnitrilation of arylboronic acids with trityl isocyanide in the presence of manganese(III) acetate. Many functional groups can be tolerated in this transformation, and a special positive effect of benzoic acid in this reaction has been observed.
