Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is becoming the leading cause of blindness in the aged population. The death of photoreceptors is the principal event which is lack of curative treatment. Xaliproden, a highly selective synthetic 5-OH-tryptamine (5HT) 1A receptor agonist, has the neuroprotective potential.

For eyes to maintain optimal focus, precise coordination is required between lens optics and retina position, a mechanism that in vertebrates is governed by genetics, visual feedback, and possibly intraocular pressure (IOP). While the underlying processes have been intensely studied in vertebrates, they remain elusive in arthropods, though visual feedback may be unimportant. How do arthropod eyes remain functional while undergoing substantial growth? Here, we test whether a common physiological process, osmoregulation, could regulate growth in the sophisticated camera-type eyes of the predatory larvae of Thermonectus marmoratus diving beetles.

Introduction: Cigarette smoking adversely affects multiple aspects of human health including eye disorders such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and dry eye disease. However, there remains a knowledge gap in how constituents of cigarette smoke affect vision and retinal biology. We used zebrafish to assess effects of short-term acute exposure to cigarette smoke extract (CSE) on visual behaviour and retinal biology.

Retinal neurodegenerative diseases are the leading causes of blindness. Among numerous therapeutic strategies being explored, stimulating self-repair recently emerged as particularly appealing. A cellular source of interest for retinal repair is the Müller glial cell, which harbors stem cell potential and an extraordinary regenerative capacity in anamniotes.

Pigmentary glaucoma has recently been associated with missense mutations in that are dominantly inherited and enriched in the protein's fascinating repeat domain. PMEL pathobiology is intriguing because PMEL forms amyloid in healthy eyes, and this PMEL amyloid acts to scaffold melanin deposition. This is an informative contradistinction to prominent neurodegenerative diseases where amyloid formation is neurotoxic and mutations cause a toxic gain of function called "amyloidosis".
