Photon nudging allows the manipulation and confinement of individual self-propelled micro-swimmers in 2D and 3D environments using feedback controls. Presented in this second part of a two-part contribution are theoretical models that afford the characterization for the positioning distribution associated with active localization. A derivation for the optimal nudging speed and acceptance angle is given for minimal placement uncertainty. The analytical solutions allow for a discussion on the physical underpinning that underlies controllability and optimality.

Article Synopsis
  • - Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a major global health issue leading to high rates of death and disability, with traditional treatments often harming other body parts.
  • - Micro/nanomotors are tiny, self-propelled devices that can navigate the bloodstream, targeting problematic areas like atherosclerotic plaques and improving treatment effectiveness.
  • - This review examines recent advances in micro/nanomotor technology for treating atherosclerotic disease, their potential in imaging plaques, and the need for personalized treatment approaches that consider individual patient factors.

Dynamics of Aggregation in Systems of Self-Propelled Rods.

We highlight camphene-camphor-polypropylene plastic as a useful material for self-propelled objects that show aggregation while floating on a water surface. We consider self-propelled rods as an example of aggregation of objects characterized by non-trivial individual shapes with low-symmetry interactions between them. The motion of rods made of the camphene-camphor-polypropylene plastic is supported by dissipation of the surface-active molecules.

Motility-Induced Pinning in Flocking System with Discrete Symmetry.

Department of Physics, University of Seoul, Seoul 02504, Korea.

We report a motility-induced pinning transition in the active Ising model for a self-propelled particle system with discrete symmetry. This model was known to exhibit a liquid-gas type flocking phase transition, but a recent study reveals that the polar order is metastable due to droplet excitation. Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that, for an intermediate alignment interaction strength, the steady state is characterized by traveling local domains, which renders the polar order short-ranged in both space and time.

Department of Physics, IIT Bhilai, Kutelabhata, Durg, Chhattisgarh, 491001, India.

Micromotors are the backbone of material research as they are small-sized, self-propelled, intelligent systems capable of performing multiple tasks ranging from biomedicine to environmental monitoring. One of the primary obstacles the field faces is the live detection and differentiation of individual units through a complex environment. In this study, we demonstrate a facile approach for designing light-activated dye-tagged micromotors on a large scale.

Article Synopsis
  • Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a harmful mycotoxin found in food that poses health risks, making its detection in cereal-based foods crucial.
  • A novel sensor was developed using zinc-tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (Zn-TCPP) nanorods and BiS@Au nanoflowers, which enhanced luminescence signals and allowed for the ultra-sensitive detection of OTA in various food samples.
  • This innovative approach not only effectively detects OTA at very low concentrations (as low as 0.13 pg/mL) but also offers a promising research avenue for analyzing other mycotoxins and advancing the study of metal-organic frameworks.
