Microbial community of municipal drinking water in Hangzhou using metagenomic sequencing.

February 2024

Department of Infectious Diseases, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, 310016, China; Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology and Bioinformatics of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou, 310016, China; Regional Medical Center for National Institute of Respiratory Diseases, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, 310016, China. Electronic address:

While traditional culture-dependent methods can effectively detect certain microorganisms, the comprehensive composition of the municipal drinking water (DW) microbiome, including bacteria, archaea, and viruses, remains unknown. Metagenomic sequencing has opened the door to accurately determine and analyze the entire microbial community of DW, providing a comprehensive understanding of DW species diversity, especially in the context of public health concerns during the COVID-19 era. In this study, we found that most of the culturable bacteria and some fecal indicator bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, were non-culturable using culture-dependent methods in all samples.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a human viral infectious disease caused by the positive-sense single-stranded (ss) RNA Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) (Retroviridae family, Ortervirales order). HIV-1 can be distinguished into various worldwide spread groups and subtypes. HIV-2 also causes human immunodeficiency, which develops slowly and tends to be less aggressive.

Landscapes of Enteric Virome Signatures in Early-Weaned Piglets.

Microbiol Spectr

August 2022

College of Animal Sciences and Technology, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, China.

Diarrhea caused by early-weaning-induced stress can increase mortality rates and reduce growth performance of piglets, seriously harming the livestock industry. To date, studies on the gut microbiome of early-weaned piglets have focused almost exclusively on bacteria, while studies on their gut virome are extremely lacking. Here, we used metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing combined with bioinformatic analysis techniques to preliminarily characterize the intestinal virome of early-weaned piglets at different biological classification levels.

The family comprises metazoan-infecting reverse-transcribing viruses with long terminal repeats, commonly known as Bel/Pao LTR retrotransposons. These viruses share evolutionary history and genes involved in genome replication and virion formation with reverse-transcribing viruses of the families , , and . These five families form the order .

Tephritid fruit flies have a large diversity of co-occurring RNA viruses.

J Invertebr Pathol

November 2021

Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, Western Sydney University, Locked Bag 1797, Penrith, NSW 2751, Australia. Electronic address:

Tephritid fruit flies are amongst the most devastating pests of horticulture, and Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) programs have been developed for their control. Their interactions with viruses are still mostly unexplored, yet, viruses may negatively affect tephritid health and performance in SIT programs, and, conversely, constitute potential biological control agents. Here we analysed ten transcriptome libraries obtained from laboratory populations of nine tephritid species from Australia (six species of Bactrocera, and Zeugodacus cucumis), Asia (Bactrocera dorsalis) and Europe (Ceratitis capitata).
