A low pre-existing anti-NS1 humoral immunity to DENV is associated with microcephaly development after gestational ZIKV exposure.

PLoS Negl Trop Dis

January 2025

División de Inmunología, Programa de Medicina, Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud, Universidad Surcolombiana, Neiva, Huila, Colombia.

Background: Gestational Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is associated with the development of congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), which includes microcephaly and fetal demise. The magnitude and quality of orthoflavivirus-specific humoral immunity have been previously linked to the development of CZS. However, the role of ZIKV NS1-specific humoral immunity in mothers and children with prenatal ZIKV exposure and CZS remains undefined.

Climate warming is expected to substantially impact the global landscape of mosquito-borne disease, but these impacts will vary across disease systems and regions. Understanding which diseases, and where within their distributions, these impacts are most likely to occur is critical for preparing public health interventions. While research has centered on potential warming-driven expansions in vector transmission, less is known about the potential for vectors to experience warming-driven stress or even local extirpations.

The survival of mosquitoes under changing climatic conditions particularly temperature, is known to be supported by Heat Shock Proteins (HSPs). In view of climate change, it is imperative to know whether the mosquito vectors will be able to withstand the increased temperatures or perish. Therefore, the present study was undertaken on the expression of HSPs' gene in An.

Risk of introducing Zika virus in the Canadian cord blood supply: A risk analysis.

Transfusion

December 2024

Medical Affairs and Innovation, Héma-Québec, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Background: In Canada, as many as 24% of mothers are deferred from cord blood (CB) donation due to risk factors for Zika virus (ZIKV). However, the ZIKV epidemic has waned considerably since 2016, and there has not been any report of ZIKV transmission by CB transplantation, which questions this policy. Thus, we performed an analysis of the risk of introducing ZIKV in the CB supply maintained by Héma-Québec (HQ) and Canadian Blood Services (CBS).
