Skin is the largest body organ and the first barrier to exogenous threats. This organ is constantly exposed to external factors such as ultraviolet radiation, which induces many adverse effects including sunburn, depigmentation, photo aging, photo immune suppression, and even skin cancer. Antioxidants seem to be good candidates in order to reduce ultraviolet-mediated damages and to prevent the health consequences of ultraviolet exposure. The present investigation aims to further characterize the potential skin photoprotective effects of a food supplementation and a topical administration of a melon concentrate alone or in combination. A clinical study assessing the Minimal Erythema Dose (MED) was first set up to evaluate photoprotection. Afterward, an independent in vitro study was performed on human skin explants from a donor to evaluate the effect of the melon concentrate at different levels including on the sunburn cells formation and on the endogenous antioxidant enzymes and its influence on melanin. Clinical study results demonstrate that melon concentrate application and/or supplementation increased MED. It also increased the endogenous antioxidant enzymes and reduced sunburn cells and melanin level on irradiated skin explants. Therefore, it is suggested that melon concentrate administration (oral and/or topical) could be a useful strategy for photoprotection due to its antioxidant properties.

To analyze the emission characteristics of VOCs from pesticide use sources in Beijing, the distribution of commonly used pesticides and dosage forms in Beijing was obtained through on-site research, and the VOC content of pesticides in different dosage forms was examined using laboratory testing methods. The emission factors of pesticide VOCs for localized dosage forms in Beijing were established, an inventory of pesticide use source VOCs was compiled, and the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of pesticide use source VOCs were analyzed. The results indicated that ① Pesticide dosage forms were the main factors affecting the emission of VOCs from pesticides, and when accounting for VOC emissions from pesticide sources, it is necessary to know the types of pesticides and active ingredients in the target area and obtain information on pesticide dosage forms simultaneously.

A contamination analysis was conducted on the soil and crops in the Liu Jia Dian gold mining area of the Pinggu District, Beijing, utilizing the contents and seven-step forms of heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Cr, Pb, and As) in soil and the heavy metal contents in crops at the same location. An assessment of ecological risk caused by heavy metal contamination in the soil and crops was carried out using the enrichment coefficient method and the risk assessment coding method. The study investigated the process of heavy metal absorption and enrichment in the soil-crop system, aiming to establish a scientific foundation for preventing and controlling soil pollution, as well as ensuring the safety of edible crops in the study area.
