A low-powered and highly selective photomechanical sensor system mimicking stomata in the epidermis of leaves harvested from nature is demonstrated. This device uses a light-responsive composite consisting of 4-amino-1,1'-azobenzene-3,4'-disulfonic acid monosodium salt (AZO) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) coated on a membrane with tens of nanometer-size pores. The ionic current change through the pore channels as a function of pore size variation is then measured. The tran-cis isomerism of AZO-PDDA during light irradiation and the operation mechanism of photomechanical ion channel sensor are discussed and analyzed using UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy analysis. It presents the discriminative current levels to the different light wavelengths. The response time of the photoreceptor is about 0.2 s and it consumes very low operating power (≈15 nW) at 0.1 V bias. In addition, it is found that the change of the pore diameter during the light irradiation is due to the photomechanical effect, which is capable of distinguishing light intensity and wavelength.

Stimuli-responsive ion nanochannels have attracted considerable attention in various fields because of their remote controllability of ionic transportation. For photoresponsive ion nanochannels, however, achieving precise regulation of ion conductivity is still challenging, primarily due to the difficulty of programmable structural changes in confined environments. Moreover, the relationship between noncontact photo-stimulation in nanoscale and light-induced ion conductivity has not been well understood.

Dynamic photoactuating crystals have become a sensation due to their potential applications in developing smart medical devices, molecular machines, artificial muscles, flexible electronics actuators, probes and microrobots. Here we report the synthesis of two iso-structural metal-organic crystals, [Zn(4-ohbz)(4-nvp)] (1) and [Cd(4-ohbz)(4-nvp)] (2) {H4-ohbz = 4-hydroxy benzoic acid; 4-nvp = 4-(1-naphthylvinyl)pyridine} which undergo topochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition under UV irradiation as well as sunlight to generate a dimerized product of discrete metal-complex [Zn(4-ohbz)(rctt-4-pncb)] {rctt-4-pncb = 1,3-bis(4'-pyridyl)-2,4-bis(naphthyl)cyclobutane} (1') and one-dimensional coordination polymer (1D CP) [Cd(4-ohbz)(rctt-4-pncb)] (2') respectively, in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) process. The Zn-based compound demonstrates photosalient behaviour, wherein crystals show jumping, splitting, rolling, and swelling upon UV irradiation.

Multifunctional hydrogels show potential applications in actuators and wearable sensors. However, it is still a challenge to develop a photothermal responsive conductive hydrogel with high transparency, mechanical properties, broad sensing range, and low-temperature resistance. In this work, a transparent, photothermal responsive, and highly stretchable alginate-based hydrogels was feasibly constructed by adding two-dimensional non-layered molybdenum dioxide nanosheets (2D-MoO) to sodium alginate/polyacrylamide mixture and then soaking into the calcium chloride solution.

The photochromic properties of a hybrid compound comprised of the surfactant cation cetyltrimethylammonium [(CH)N(CH)] (CTA) and the isopolytungstate anion [HWO] is investigated. The compound, which has the nominal formula (CTA)[HWO]Cl·2HO, changes from white to blue when exposed to UV radiation. The sample returns to the bleached state if stored in the dark-ambient.
