Sulfoxides and cyclic ureas are photochemically deoxygenating solvents in which the oxidative stress could be released and efficient triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion (TTA-UC) can operate in air. Such solvents can be practically screened out by harnessing the property of photo-activated phosphorescence.

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO) is a common photocatalyst for water remediation, yet its powder form renders difficult to disperse, recycle, and regenerate, limiting photodegradation efficiency. In this study, a lignocellulosic-templated BiVO photocatalyst was fabricated from BiVO precursor and lignocellulose using a simple vacuum impregnation (w/o heat treatment on wood template). Results showed that the modified template retained original hierarchical structure with an increased specific surface area and reduced hemicellulose content, leading to a promising template for uniform distribution of BiVO.

Cucurbalsaminones B (1) and C (2) are two abeo-cucurbitane triterpenoids with a unique 5/6/3/6/5-fused ring system and exhibit potent multidrug resistance (MDR)-reversing activity. Herein, we report the first synthesis of these two natural products, both of them were accomplished in 14 steps from commercially available inexpensive resource compound lanosterol. Key features of this synthesis include a biomimetic tandem Wagner-Meerwein type lanostane-to-cucurbitane rearrangement followed by a bioinspired photochemical oxa-di-π-methane (ODPM) rearrangement to complete the skeleton construction and an Eosin Y photoinduced Barton-McCombie deoxygenation to realize the challenging oxidation state adjustment of the sterically hindered C11 position.

Upon constant photo-excitation, the phosphorescence intensities of long-lived triplet emitters dissolved in sulfoxide solvents under air exhibit periodic oscillations with regulatable frequencies and amplitudes, which is attributed to the interplay between photochemical deoxygenation and Rayleigh-Bénard convections.

Homomolecular photon upconversion-induced radical polymerization in an aerated DMSO solution occurs where molecular oxygen is depleted by sensitized photochemical deoxygenation and this photoreaction could be programmed into 2.5D grayscale printings by digital light processing.
