We study the effect of nonlinear coupling in a WDM configuration over a two-mode fiber. A statistical analysis is presented that takes into account the effect of the random phase-sensitive amplification or depletion. Our results show high nonlinear coupling between the modes. We have quantified the channel power fluctuations, due to the wave phase random variations, at the output of the fiber. We also investigate the effect of random linear mode coupling on the nonlinear mode coupling.

Human-driven habitat loss is recognized as the greatest cause of the biodiversity crisis, yet to date we lack robust, spatially explicit metrics quantifying the impacts of anthropogenic changes in habitat extent on species' extinctions. Existing metrics either fail to consider species identity or focus solely on recent habitat losses. The persistence score approach developed by Durán .

The rapid acceleration of urbanization and the surge in car ownership necessitate efficient automatic parking solutions in constricted spaces to address the escalating urban parking issue. To optimize space utilization, enhance traffic efficiency, and mitigate accident risks, a method is proposed for smooth, comfortable, and adaptable automatic parking trajectory planning. This study initially employs a hybrid A* algorithm to generate a preliminary path, then fits the velocity and acceleration based on a cubic polynomial.

Cortical direction selectivity increases from the input to the output layers of visual cortex.

Sensitivity to motion direction is a feature of visual neurons that is essential for motion perception. Recent studies have suggested that direction selectivity is re-established at multiple stages throughout the visual hierarchy, which contradicts the traditional assumption that direction selectivity in later stages largely derives from that in earlier stages. By recording laminar responses in areas 17 and 18 of anesthetized cats of both sexes, we aimed to understand how direction selectivity is processed and relayed across 2 successive stages: the input layers and the output layers within the early visual cortices.

The present investigation seeks to customize the optical, magnetic, and structural characteristics of nickel oxide (NiO) nanopowders through chromium, iron, cobalt, copper, and zinc doping to enhance optoelectronic applications. In this regard, the preparation of pristine NiO and Ni × O (X = Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn) powders was successfully achieved through the co-precipitation method. The X-ray powder diffraction was employed to examine the prepared powders' phase formation and crystal structure characteristics.

Multiple tipping points in the Earth system could be triggered when global warming exceeds specific thresholds. However, the degree of their impact on the East Asian hydroclimate remains uncertain due to the lack of quantitative rainfall records. Here we present an ensemble reconstruction of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) rainfall since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) using nine statistical and machine learning methods based on multi-proxy records from a maar lake in southern China.
