Purpose: Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is critical for phosphate homeostasis. Considering the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and the association of FGF23 with adverse outcomes, we investigated effects of vitamin D3 supplementation on FGF23 concentrations.

Methods: This is a post-hoc analysis of the Styrian Vitamin D Hypertension trial, a single-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, conducted from 2011 to 2014 at the Medical University of Graz, Austria. Two hundred subjects with 25(OH)D concentrations < 30 ng/mL and arterial hypertension were randomized to receive either 2800 IU of vitamin D3 daily or placebo over 8 weeks. Primary outcome was the between-group difference in FGF23 levels at study end while adjusting for baseline values.

Results: Overall, 181 participants (mean ± standard deviation age, 60.1 ± 11.3; 48% women) with available c-term FGF23 concentrations were considered for the present analysis. Mean treatment duration was 54 ± 10 days in the vitamin D3 group and 54 ± 9 days in the placebo group. At baseline, FGF23 was significantly correlated with serum phosphate (r = 0.135; p = 0.002). Vitamin D3 supplementation had no significant effect on FGF23 in the entire cohort (mean treatment effect 0.374 pmol/L; 95% confidence interval - 0.024 to 0.772 pmol/L; p = 0.065), but increased FGF23 concentrations in subgroups with baseline 25(OH)D concentrations below 20 ng/mL (n = 70; mean treatment effect 0.973 pmol/L; 95% confidence interval - 0.032 to 1.979 pmol/L; p = 0.019) and 16 ng/mL (n = 40; mean treatment effect 0.593 pmol/L; 95% confidence interval 0.076 to 1.109; p = 0.022).

Conclusions: Vitamin D3 supplementation had no significant effect on FGF23 in the entire study cohort. We did, however, observe an increase of FGF23 concentrations in subgroups with low baseline 25(OH)D.

Impact of Ovarian Suspensory Ligament Rupture on Surgical Stress in Elective Ovariohysterectomy in Bitches.

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Saúde, Bem-Estar e Produção Animal Sustentável na Fronteira Sul (PPG-SBPAS), Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul (UFFS), Realeza 85770-000, Brazil.

Ovariohysterectomy (OVH) is a common procedure in bitches, where ovarian suspensory ligament (OSL) rupture facilitates hemostasis but may also have adverse effects. Given the importance of minimizing the surgical stress response, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of OSL rupture in 20 healthy bitches undergoing elective open OVH; a celiotomy via the ventral midline was performed, and hemostasis achieved using bipolar coagulation, either with OSL rupture (OSL-R) or without (OSL-NR). Pain was assessed over 24 h post-surgery using the Visual Analogue Scale and the Short Form of the Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale.

Trends in the pet food industry are driven by the humanization of pets, favoring the inclusion of functional ingredients or supplements that promote animal health. Several commercial diets claim to include supplements with benefits for dogs' immune function, but in vivo evidence that supports their efficacy remains limited. This literature review aimed to better understand the current knowledge on the effects of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients on dogs' immune function.

Yak (), a special breed of cattle on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, has low fertility due to nutritional deficiency, especially the trace elements. The steroid hormones estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) synthesized by yak follicular granulosa cells (BGCs) are involved in the entire reproductive process. In the present study, we investigated the effects of trace elements and vitamins on yak follicular GCs, including the cellular activity, the synthesis of E2 and P4, and the expression of genes related to steroid hormone synthesis.

Saliva Proteome, Metabolome and Microbiome Signatures for Detection of Alzheimer's Disease.

Nutrition and Health Program, Molecular Diagnostic Solutions Group, CSIRO Health & Biosecurity, Adelaide, SA 5000, Australia.

As the burden of Alzheimer's disease (AD) escalates with an ageing population, the demand for early and accessible diagnostic methods becomes increasingly urgent. Saliva, with its non-invasive and cost-effective nature, presents a promising alternative to cerebrospinal fluid and plasma for biomarker discovery. : In this study, we conducted a comprehensive multi-omics analysis of saliva samples ( = 20 mild cognitive impairment (MCI), = 20 Alzheimer's disease and age- and = 40 gender-matched cognitively normal individuals), from the South Australian Neurodegenerative Disease (SAND) cohort, integrating proteomics, metabolomics, and microbiome data with plasma measurements, including pTau181.
