Getting the green light! Substituted arylazopyrazoles (AAPs) have been investigated as supramolecular photoswitches in aqueous solution. Selective photostationary states (PSSs) and improved binding affinities to β-cyclodextrin have been determined. The experimental findings are supported by results from DFT calculations.

We serendipitously discovered a novel series of azoheteroarene dyes capable of detecting pH variations in near-neutral solutions. These dyes feature thiazole, thiadiazole, triazole, pyrazole, or benzothiazole heteroaryls linked to hydroxyphenyl azo groups. They exhibit distinctive light absorption properties in aqueous solutions and show notable color changes in a narrow pH range, visible to the naked eye.

2,2-Bis-(methylol)propionic acid-based second-generation polyester dendron amphiphile (T-D) containing visible light-responsive donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA) as hydrophobic tails is synthesized. Micelles of T-D amphiphile and its mixed micelles of varying compositions with nonresponsive dendron amphiphile containing lauryl groups are prepared in aqueous solution. In transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analyses, T-D amphiphiles show rice grain-like ellipsoidal micelles as the predominant morphology.

The complex formation of the cationic stilbene-type photoswitch CP with the anionic macrocycles carboxylato-pillar[5]arene (WP5) and carboxylato-pillar[6]arene (WP6) has been investigated in aqueous solution by optical spectroscopic, NMR and isothermal calorimetric experiments and theoretical calculations. Subsequently, the photoisomerization reactions of the supramolecular complexes formed have been studied. CP consists of a 7-diethylamino-coumarin fluorophore and an -methylpyridinium unit, which are connected via an ethene bridge.

Smart responsive materials have spurred the progress in high-precision drug delivery. Enormous attention has been given to characterizing drug release in bulk aqueous solutions, however, aqueous-hydrophobic interfaces are vital components of biological systems which serve as the point of entry into cells. These interfaces are involved in many key biomolecular interactions, and while the potential for drug molecules to adsorb to these interfaces is recognized, their specific role in the context of drug release remains largely unexplored.
