Background: Food safety has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Harmful gases often produced during food storage have devastating effects on human health and ecosystems, and identifying and detecting them is essential. To date, many traditional methods have been used to monitor the freshness of food products.

Induction of age-related ocular disorders in a mouse model of pulmonary fibrosis.

Exp Eye Res

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Optometry and Visual Science, Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, 270 Xueyuan Road, Wenzhou, Zhejiang 325027, P. R. China. Electronic address:

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive lung disease linked to aging. This study investigates potential connections between IPF and age-related eye problems using a bleomycin-induced IPF mouse model. Intratracheal administration of bleomycin induces rapid lung injury in mice, followed by IPF with characteristics of cellular senescence.

Around one-quarter of all patients undergoing cardiac procedures, particularly those on cardiopulmonary bypass, develop cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI). This complication increases the risk of several serious morbidities and of mortality, representing a significant burden for both patients and the healthcare system. Patients with diminished kidney function before surgery, such as those with chronic kidney disease, are at heightened risk of developing CSA-AKI and have poorer outcomes than patients without preexisting kidney injury who develop CSA-AKI.

Electronic address:

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are not effective for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD)-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients, and identifying the key gut microbiota that contributes to immune resistance in these patients is crucial. Analysis using 16S rRNA sequencing reveals a decrease in Akkermansia muciniphila (Akk) during MAFLD-promoted HCC development. Administration of Akk ameliorates liver steatosis and effectively attenuates the tumor growth in orthotopic MAFLD-HCC mouse models.

Nutritional assessment of patients with liver cirrhosis in the outpatient setting: A narrative review.

Nutrition

December 2024

Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; Department of Gastroenterology, Western Health, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Malnutrition is common in liver cirrhosis and is associated with increased rates of complications, hospitalization, and mortality. There are no consensus guidelines for malnutrition assessment in liver cirrhosis and a large number of clinicians do not routinely assess for malnutrition in patients with liver cirrhosis. This review explores the tools available for assessment of malnutrition in patients with liver cirrhosis, including nutritional screening protocols, anthropometric tools, biochemical tools, techniques analyzing body composition and functional assessments.
