Although humic acids (HAs) from peat exhibit various therapeutic properties, there is little information available concerning their physicochemical and antioxidant properties. To address this issue, nine different types of peat, including oligotrophic, mesotrophic, and minerotrophic peat samples, were used for isolation of HA fractions by basic (HAb) and pyrophosphate (HAp) extractions. Physical parameters of the HAs were analyzed by UV-Vis, fluorescent, infrared (IR), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Average M of the fractions ranged from 17.2 to 39.7 kDa, while their humification index (HIX) varied from 0.49 to 1.21. HAp fractions had a higher content of aromatic structures compared to HAb fractions. Moreover, HAp fractions had a significantly higher content of phenolic OH groups (3.6 ± 0.5 mmol/g) versus HAb (3.1 ± 0.5 mmol/g). All HA fractions exhibited antioxidant activity in radical scavenging and electrochemical assays, and their EPR signal had a single line with g = 2.0035, which is consistent with semiquinone type radicals. Furthermore, the HIX was found to be important in determining the number of semiquinone-type free radicals in the HA structures. Overall, these data provide a molecular basis to explain at least part of the beneficial therapeutic properties of peat-derived HAs.

Investigation of chitin grafting: thermal, antioxidant and antitumor properties.

Discov Nano

January 2025

Institute of Science, Department of Chemistry, Firat University, 23200, Elazığ, Turkey.

In this study, firstly chitin was reacted with chloracetyl chloride to synthesize the macroinitiator chitinchloroacetate (Ch.ClAc). Then, graft copolymers of methacrylamide (MAM), diacetone acrylamide (DAAM), N-(4-nitrophenyl)acrylamide (NPA), and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP).

The current study investigated the effect of a single administration of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) and its nanoparticles (NPs) on testicular hemodynamics using Doppler ultrasonography, testicular volume, testicular echotexture (PIX), and circulating testosterone and nitric oxide (NO) in pubescent goat bucks during summer months. Fifteen Baladi goats were divided into three groups (5 in each) and subjected to a single intramuscular administration of one ml of physiological saline ( control group), one ml containing 500 IU of hCG (hCG group) or one ml containing 125 IU of hCG NPs (hCG NPs group). Testicular hemodynamics assessment was done just before administration (0 h), and at 2, 4, 6, 24, and daily till 7 days after administration.

Key Laboratory of Organic Integrated Circuit, Ministry of Education & Tianjin Key Laboratory of Molecular Optoelectronic Sciences, Department of Chemistry, School of Science, Tianjin University, Tianjin, 300072, China.

A Cr-doped VO nanobelt (Cr/VO) with remarkable peroxidase-like activity was synthesized and coupled with uricase to catalyze the cascade reaction for  detection of uric acid. Notably, the affinity of Cr/VO for 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine dihydrochloride hydrate (TMB) and hydrogen peroxide (HO) is tenfold and 20-fold higher, respectively, than that of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The Cr/VO exhibits highly reactive and stable peroxidase activity at temperatures of 20-60 ℃.

Alzheimer's disease is a complex neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive decline in cognitive function and behaviour. Ginger is the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale Roscoe, has been an important ingredient of many Ayurveda formulations to treat neurological disorders. The present study aims to estimate the variation of 6-gingerol content in nine different ginger samples collected from Manipur, India, investigate the neuroprotective potential of the most potent ginger sample against scopolamine-induced cognitively impaired mice, and validate the therapeutic claim by molecular docking analysis.
