Experimental Study on Deep-Drawing Dies Made of Pre-Stressed UHPC.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Chair of Metal Forming and Casting, Technical University of Munich, Walther-Meissner-Strasse 4, 85748 Garching, Germany.

Deep drawing is a cost-efficient way of producing sheet metal parts in high production volumes. Prototypes and very small series are expensive due to the cost of steel-forming tools. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) tools offer a cheap and fast alternative to conventional steel-forming tools.

The Possible Crystallization Process in the Origin of Bacteria, Archaea, Viruses, and Mobile Elements.

Biology (Basel)

December 2024

Division of Biochemistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University, Sendai 981-8558, Japan.

We propose a hypothesis for the simultaneous emergence of bacteria, archaea, viruses, and mobile elements by sequential and concrete biochemical pathways. The emergence process can be considered analogous to crystallization, where genetic and biochemical systems stabilize as organisms evolve from their common ancestor, the LUCA, which was a non-free-living pool of single operon type genomes including double-stranded (ds) DNA at an ancient submarine alkaline vent. Each dsDNA operon was transcribed by different systems in σ, TFIIB, or TBP genomes.

Sponsorship is gaining recognition in academic surgery as an essential advancement beyond mentorship, particularly for women. While mentorship focuses on building the relationship between mentor and mentee to provide guidance, advice, and coaching, sponsorship entails more active involvement and buy-in from the senior towards the performance and growth of the junior. The ABCDs of sponsorship - Amplifying, Boosting, Connecting, and Defending - are powerful, concrete actions that can make a significant impact in the career and life of a future physician.

Electrochemical tests combined with surface characterization techniques were used to investigate the corrosion evolution of passivated Q355B steel under the dual action of pH and chloride. The results show that the Q355B passivation film in simulated concrete pore solution is the amorphous oxide layer, and pH and Cl have closely coupled effects on Q355B corrosion. Meanwhile, the impact of pH is more significant: the decrease in pH shifts from pitting to uniform corrosion.

In addition to the usual evaluation approach (usually a clinical randomized trial in the sense of the question: does an intervention work), complex interventions require further systematic investigations to prove their effectiveness. The role of the context in which the intervention is delivered is essential here, as is consideration of the question of why an intervention works (or does not work). Detailed recommendations exist for the planning and implementation of effectiveness studies on complex interventions, to which interdisciplinary multimodal pain therapy undoubtedly belongs.
