Handle shape influences system usability in telemanipulation.

Front Robot AI

November 2024

Bio-Inspired RObots for MEDicine-Laboratory, Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel, Allschwil, Switzerland.

Introduction: Ergonomic issues are widespread among surgeons performing teleoperated robotic surgery. As the ergonomics of a teleoperation system depends on the controller handle, it needs to be designed wisely. While the importance of the controller handle in robot-assisted telemanipulation has been highlighted previously, most existing work on the usability of a human-robot system for surgery was of qualitative nature or did not focus on surgery-specific tasks.

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 1,182 return letters were sent, with the highest volume occurring early in the intervention, and interviews with medical directors and managers highlighted five key factors that contributed to its success.

Imaging methods are fundamental tools to detect and diagnose lung diseases, monitor their treatment and detect possible complications. Each modality, starting from classical chest radiographs and computed tomography, as well as the ever more popular and easily available thoracic ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear medicine methods, and new techniques such as photon counting computed tomography, radiomics and application of artificial intelligence, has its strong and weak points, which we should be familiar with to properly choose between the methods and interpret their results. In this review, we present the indications, strengths and main limitations of methods for chest imaging.

Pediatric peri-insular hemispherotomy and functional hemispherectomy for severe medically refractory epilepsy: comparison of two techniques.

Neurochirurgie

November 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Fleni. Montañeses 2325, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Department of Neurosurgery, Garrahan Children's Hospital, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Purpose: Since it was first described in the 1970s, functional hemispherotomy has been an essential tool in treating disabling, medically refractory epilepsy resulting from diffuse unilateral hemispheric disease. We report our experience with 23 patients who underwent hemispherotomy, both using the functional hemispherotomy (FH) as well as a modified peri-insular hemispherotomy (PIH) technique. We present the surgical technique for the latter, review outcomes following disconnection surgery and discuss the differences between the techniques when it comes to complications and postoperative results.
