Unlabelled: In this randomized phase Ib trial, we tested combining the E39 peptide vaccine with a vaccine created from E39', an attenuated version of E39. Patients with breast or ovarian cancer, who were disease-free after standard of care therapy, were enrolled and randomized to one of three arms. Arm EE received six E39 inoculations; arm EE' received three E39 inoculations followed by three E39'; and arm E'E received three E39' inoculations, followed by three E39. Within each arm, the first five patients received 500 μg of peptide and the remainder received 1000 μg. Patients were followed for toxicity, and immune responses were measured. This initial analysis after completion of the primary vaccination series has confirmed the safety of both vaccines. Immune analyses suggest incorporating the attenuated version of the peptide improves immune responses and that sequencing of E39 followed by E39' might produce the optimal immune response.

Trial Registration: NCT02019524.

Background: Poor cardiovascular health in midlife increases risk of dementia in later years. At least some of this risk may stem from early decrements in cognitive ability in those with poor cardiovascular health that are already evident by midlife. Whether such associations are causal, however, or develop in tandem due to shared factors encountered earlier in life, remains unclear.

Background: The Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) showed intensive blood pressure (BP) control, defined by systolic BP goal of < 120 mm Hg, reduced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. However, a secondary analysis that incorporated approximately 4-years of observational follow-up found that mean BP levels increased after the trial and the benefit of intensive BP control on cardiovascular and all-cause mortality attenuated. We re-examined these findings using an updated version of the observational data that includes approximately 8-years of follow-up.

Introduction: Taohong Siwu decoction (THSWD), a traditional prescription for enhancing blood circulation and eliminating blood stasis, primarily comprises peach kernel, safflower, angelica, chuanxiong, and rehmannia. Modified Taohong Siwu decoction (MTHSWD), an advanced version of THSWD, incorporates additional ingredients such as epimedium, cinnamon, and salvia miltiorrhiza. This addition serves to augment its efficacy in warming yang and promoting blood circulation.

Improved S-bend optical waveguide loss formula verified by experiments.

Curvature of a dielectric waveguide always leads to attenuation of the mode power as it propagates through the curved region. In single mode guides, bending loss becomes significant as the radius of curvature reduces and is strongly dependent on the confinement of the guided mode, so that weakly guiding waveguides can tolerate only large radii of curvature. In this paper we verify our new theoretical version on power loss prediction of S-bend optical waveguides by using analytical theory based on integration of absorption coefficient and compare it to the experimental measurement of such waveguide bends.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a neuroinvasive and neurovirulent orthoflavivirus, can be prevented in humans with the SA14-14-2 vaccine, a live-attenuated version derived from the wild-type SA14 strain. To determine the viral factors responsible for the differences in pathogenicity between SA14 and SA14-14-2, we initially established a reverse genetics system that includes a pair of full-length infectious cDNAs for both strains. Using this cDNA pair, we then systematically exchanged genomic regions between SA14 and SA14-14-2 to generate 20 chimeric viruses and evaluated their replication capability in cell culture and their pathogenic potential in mice.
