Buncombe County: One Path Toward a Resilient Community.

There is an increasing national awareness that improving the health of the nation will need to involve addressing social determinants of health, including adverse childhood experiences. Advances in translational science and the science of social change have created new opportunities to address this refractory problem. This paper will describe a cross-sector collaborative effort in Western North Carolina that has produced unexpected fruit since its start in 2010, discuss themes that supported success, and identify future essential work.

A Novel Method for Stimulating L. Male Flowers from Female Plants.

Female hemp plants are desired in floral hemp operations due to their higher cannabinoid contents. To produce feminized seeds, a critical step of inducing fertile male flowers on female plants is performed. In feminized seed production, freshly mixed STS (silver thiosulfate + sodium thiosulfate) is applied to female plants as an ethylene inhibitor to induce male flowers.

Objectives: On September 23, 2019, the North Carolina Division of Public Health identified a legionellosis increase in western North Carolina; most patients had recently attended the North Carolina Mountain State Fair. We conducted a source investigation.

Methods: Cases were fair attendees with laboratory-confirmed legionellosis and symptom onset within 2 to 14 days (Legionnaires' disease) or ≤3 days (Pontiac fever).
