Published: March 2018

We examined the responses of the phytoplankton and the bacterioplankton of the freshwater zone of the Río de la Plata estuary when exposed to an addition of hexavalent chromium (Cr). The planktonic community from a coastal site was exposed to a chromium increase of 80 μg L for 72 h in laboratory conditions. The results showed a decrease in the concentration of Cr by 33% in the treatments, along with significant decreases in chlorophyll-a (63%), the chlorophyll-a:pheophytin-a ratio (33%), oxygen production (37%), and in the total density of the phytoplankton (15%). The relative abundance of chlorophytes and diatoms decreased, while the cyanobacteria thrived. Finally, the total bacterial density and the density of viable bacteria decreased. These results show that even small increments in Cr can cause significant effects on the phytoplankton and bacterioplankton, which could potentially affect other trophic levels of the community, risking alterations of the entire ecosystem.

Coastal bays link terrestrial and oceanic carbon reservoirs and play important roles in marine carbon cycles. Particulate organic carbon (POC) produced by phytoplankton is a major autochthonous carbon source in coastal bays. Previous studies on the fate of POC produced by phytoplankton mainly focused on the relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton in classic food webs, while our knowledge on the roles of bacterioplankton is still limited, particularly in bays under highly intensive aquaculture activities.

Specialized Bacteroidetes dominate the Arctic Ocean during marine spring blooms.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed how bacterioplankton in Arctic seawater changed during a summer phytoplankton bloom, revealing that specialized bacterial clades like Bacteroidetes became dominant.
  • Bacteroidetes not only displaced other microorganisms typically found in nutrient-poor waters, but also showed enhanced abilities to break down polysaccharides, particularly those from algae.
  • The research identified specific proteins and genetic adaptations in Bacteroidetes, indicating their specialization in utilizing polysaccharides during these bloom events.

The change in the community structure of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton, and in the degree of coupling between them as well as the environmental conditions, have substantial impacts on the transfer of energy to higher trophic levels and finally on the fate of organic matter. The microbial community structure, usually described only by the abundance of the different taxonomic or functional groups, can be extended to include other levels of descriptors, like physiological state and single-cell properties. These features play a role in the ecological regulation of microbial communities but are not generally studied as additional descriptors of the community structure.

The widespread use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has resulted in their release into the aquatic environment, which threatens the health of aquatic ecosystems. Although the ecotoxicological effects of AgNPs have been widely reported at individual and population levels, the impact of long-term exposure to AgNPs on community structure and ecosystem function in aquatic ecosystems remains poorly understood. Herein, the present study investigated the effects of long-term exposure (28 d) to environmentally relevant concentrations (1 μg/L and 10 μg/L) of AgNPs on the community structure and function of freshwater ecosystems by artificially constructed 28 mesocosms freshwater ecosystem in experimental greenhouses, using plastic water tanks and food web manipulation.

Bioseston is a heterogeneous assemblage of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and planktonic debris. A detailed knowledge of biosestons is essential for understanding the dynamics of trophic flows in marine ecosystems. The distributional features of seston biomass in plankton (micro- and mesoplankton) in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil) were analyzed using stratified samples gathered to a depth of 2,400 m during night time.
